Word 2002 Pictures/Captions in Text Boxes (Word 2002)

I have Word 2000 at the office, and 2002 at home. When I write articles in Word 2000, I insert screen captured images into a Text Box and add a caption to the image. This way I can move the Text box around and the caption stays with the image. In Word 2002, when I tried this, the image came into the box squashed and didn’t retain the original size I set for it (which it did in 2000). My real question is: what is the best way to insert images in 2002 with a caption and have the caption stay with the image if you move it?? Why does Word put captions in separate text boxes anyway? So, any advice on the best way to do this in 2002?

I’d be interested in hearing our expert brothers and sisters chime in on this one.

Right now I follow a multi-step procedure. First I past my images in as in-line graphics (as opposed to floating graphics), so that the image is firmly associated with a paragraph marker. I use a style (image) to govern spacing before and after the image. Then I insert a caption immediately after the image using the Insert-caption dialog. After I’ve got both, I highlight them together and do an Insert Text Box. I stretch out the box to the desired size (more or less); then transform the Text Box to a frame (on the text box dialog window). I then highlight everything in the frame and kill the outlines (if my settings introduced them in the first place). I have to be careful to highlight the entire contents of a frame when killing outlines because if I make a change to just one paragraph, that paragraph is popped out of the parent frame into a new one all its own. The reason I bother with frames at all is that the automatic table of figures feature won’t pick up and report captions that appear in text boxes. Captions in frames however are gathered up properly.

If anyone has a better method, please enlighten the rest of us…

Just wanted to let you know that I tried your procedure this morning. Works just great for me! Thanks for suggesting it. I was having such trouble getting the graphics in the text box, but selecting the graphic and caption first makes it easy to get in the text box at the right size.

Hi Kim:
I haven’t worked with Word 2002, but I think you can save at least one, maybe two steps. Go to Tools/Customize…/Insert category & look for an item called Horizontal. It’s really a frame. Drag it to the Insert menu & now you can insert a frame directly, rather than a text box which you convert to a frame.

Also, you can insert the frame first, keep it selected, & insert the graphic & then the caption. This should eliminate the need to first insert inline, paste in a text box, & then convert to a frame.
