I have a Word document that has a password to modify setup; however, when I open the document it does not prompt me for this password. When I open the document and go to Tools, Options, Save and it has asterisk marks in the text box under Password to Modify – so it appears to be setup but I am not getting prompted when I open the document.
I have read in Microsoft’s Knowledge Base that if you change the format of a document, this password is lost; however, when I did this on a test document – the Password to Modify was completely removed – in other words the asterisk marks were gone from under Password to Modify; so I have been unable to recreate the problem.
Now having said this I should also point out that the document is stored in a document management system called iManage. When documents are opened they are stored on our c: drive while we are working on them and then when we close they are returned to the DMS. I did create a test document in iManage and it did honour the Password to Modify. In other words, it did prompt for a password to modify when I opened the document.
I would like to know if this is a known Microsoft Word problem or if I should be contacting iManage.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Hi there Judy… long time no talk… I’m not sure if this will help, but I remember a long time ago (could be version 97) you needed to set the password in Tools, Options, Save and not in the Save dialog box (under Tools, ?Options, ?Save Options). If you set it in the dialog box it may/may not retain the password. It was flaky. I’m thinking that 2000 may have inherited this. Since you are using DMS, isn’t it safer to apply your security within the DMS (I am not knowledgeable in iManage, but PowerDocs)… let me know how it goes… thanx… trish

Hi Trish – this is too strange… we live/work in the same city and we communicate via Woody’s – there ya go!!!
Anyway, I believe the document was originally created outside of our firm so I can’t say for sure how the password was set; I guess what I find strange is that you can see the asterisk marks indicating that it’s been set – but its not working. We would setup a Password to Modify via Tools, Options, Save and not through File, Save As. I agree that security should be set via security settings in iManage and I will definitely pass this along to the user involved.
I guess I’m just trying to figure out how this happened and if it is related to Word or iManage.
Anyway, hope all is well and thank you for responding so quickly.
Take care and keep in touch!!!!

And to be friends as well, good network we have going here!!! I remember that it did appear that a password was there in Tools, Options, Save (with asterisks) when you set it thru the Save Dialog… but did not work. Have you tried deleting the current password out thru Tools, Options, Save – OK the Options dialog and then creating a new one the same way? and does it work? Get Nancy Dancy to create a dummy doc and place a password thru the Save dialog and see what happens. Possibly need to have Word 97 to recreate the actual bug. I’m thinking most likely that the original user probably set it thru the Save dialog. I’m in XP so I can’t test… we should do lunch, I’ll call! later gater… trish

      Hi Judy:
The password to open is not the same as the password to modify. If you look in the File/SaveAs dialog box, you will see a Tools drop down button. Under this choose General Options…. This will access the Save tab from Tools/Options/Save. menu item. You can set a password to open the document from there.
      Hope this helps,

        Hi Phil
Thank you for your post. The problem is that a Password to Modify has been set (given the asterisk marks in the Password to Modify box); but it is not working. I do not get a prompt when I open the file to enter a password at all. I do not want a password to open.
        Thanks

          Hi Judy:
Maybe something got corrupted. You could delete the password to modify, save the document, & then reenter a new password to see if that works. Or just delete the password. Then, you could open a new document & Insert/File… the old document & save with a password to modify. (Copying everything except the last paragraph mark & then pasting is the same thing.)
          Hope this helps,
