Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

GuestNovember 18, 2016 at 5:17 pm #22350Thanks, Woody, for a thorough and clear path to follow in working our way through another month of Microsoft’s abominable forced update/upgrade policy!
Although I was already updated for November before I set all of my computers up on Wi-Fi and set them to “metered”, I thought I’d go through the process anyhow, just for the experience. I’ll need it next month.
I do have a question, though. You mentioned using the wushowhide tool in your directions. I thought I read a column awhile back where you don’t recommend the use of that tool any more.
I was glad to read that because the tool caused me a ton of trouble using it to do the November updates last week. I had previously done a scan Nov. 8 and marked the Cumulative Update “hidden”.
When I ran the tool’s scan again last week, some of the updates, hidden as well as unhidden, failed to show up in the lists; the November Cumulative Update (that I had hidden) being one of them. That’s the update I wanted to install. It took me hours trying to figure out how to find that update. I even downloaded it and tried a manual install, but I got a message that the update wasn’t applicable to my computer — or something close. That confirmed to me that the update was still hidden from Microsoft Update.
Finally, “something” told me to trash the wushowhide tool I had previously used, and use a fresh copy of the tool and do a new scan. It worked. All the updates were back.
Disregarding all the other problems I had with that infernal update — as is usual with all of the Cumulatives — could you make it more clear whether or not you still recommend using the wushowhide tool? And if so, have you ever heard of anyone “losing” updates using the tool as I did? If so, what’s the fix?
Thanks again and best regards,
Don Smith -

ManagerNovember 18, 2016 at 5:52 pm #22351You only need to use wushowhide if there are specific patches that you don’t want to install. Unfortunately, if you use Windows Update to check, the unwanted patches will install anyway. So we aren’t completely over the wushowhide inanities.
I don’t know of anybody losing updates. Perhaps someone else knows?
