Starting in the mid-90’s I began to follow on line and on TV the developments in animation, and the progress since then has been amazing. If cinematography, in general terms, it is the one truly popular art form of the last 100 years (at least, in my opinion), then the rise in high-quality animation, again, to me, is the kind of magical development in movie-making that ranks as high in importance as the early work of Lumiere brothers and the great Melies, and as the coming of color and sound together in the “Wizard of Oz.” Pixar has been at the forefront of this, along with Disney, Studio Ghibli in Japan, Laika and a scatter of great European co-productions, of which one of the latest is “April and the Extraordinary World” (English title). To me, some are true masterpieces (e.g. the late, great Takahata’s “The Tale of Princess Kaguya”) and by buying the DVDs, I can have at home true masterpieces on a budget.

So: welcome, Forky, and many happy returns, Pixar and the rest of that creative crowd!

And let me put here also a good word for “Trollhunters”, in Netflix, the latest animation work directed by the extraordinary Guillermo del Toro, of dark comedy (“Hell Boy” movies) and transcendentally good horror movies’ fame.
