Won’t boot (When first turned on)

I have a Satellite laptop with Win7 HP and Ubuntu installed in a dual-boot configuration. Everything has worked fine in the past so this may be a self imposed problem, but I can’t figure out how to solve it.

When first turned on it boots to the boot menu showing the default Windows and the Ubuntu choice. Nothing happens beyond that. I can’t get it to continue. I can’t choose which OS I want to boot. Nothing. Just sits there – frozen. I can turn it off and immediately turn it back on and it operates properly. Let’s me make a choice and select or just boots the default after 15 seconds. It boots to Windows from here or if I choose Ubuntu it shows me the Grub menu with choices. I have run EasyBCD to rebuild the boot menu, but that doesn’t seem to fix anything.

If I remember correctly I have the boot order in the BIOS set to: USB, CD/DVD, HD. This problem is with nothing in a USB port or the CD drive. And it HAS WORKED this way.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Have you tried booting up into the Advanced Boot Options (F8) and using either Last Known Good Configuration or Repair your Computer and navigating to the Recovery Environment and selecting Startup Repair ?

I think I fixed it. I went into the BIOS settings and changed something regarding booting (I forget) and this time it booted correctly. So it must have been “something” I did.

Do you have a nonBoot USB stick in the laptop sometimes? If so, remove it. I sometimes forget to remove a nonBoot USB stick – and get exactly what you get
