• Wonky Macro recorder?

I am recording various Macros to give me syntax for some Automation code I am writing in VBA in Access. When I set the Macro Recorder to run in Word, I don’t seem to be able to use the mouse within my document. For instance, I was working with a table and wanted to use the mouse to place the cursor in a cell in the table and I couldn’t. My pointer had the little cassette icon showing and the mouse button wouldn’t work. I could, however, navigate to the cell in question with the keyboard and the mouse worked fine outside of the document itself, even for the menus and toolbars.

Is this normal behaviour when a macro is recording, in which case I have false memory syndrome, or is my memory correct and I should be able to use the mouse in the document? I tried shutting the computer down and rebooting but still have the same behaviour. I don’t use the macro recorder very often so I’m more interested in knowing if this behaviour is normal or not. If not, is there a way to fix it or is it time to repair Office.

Using 2003 SP 3 on Windows XP

In all recent versions of Word up to and including Word 2003 (I have no experience with Word 2007), you haven’t been able to click in the document while recording a macro. You can click on menus and toolbars though, and you can use the keyboard. This means that you can’t record some actions.

So what you see is “normal” behavior.

Clearly False Memory Syndrome. Always glad to discover I’m not crazy, yet.

I appreciate your question was more along the lines of ‘I’m sure I used to be able to do this…’, but if you do want to use the mouse to position the cursor you can ‘pause’ the recording, use the mouse, then restart the recording.

That’s helpful information. It never occurred to me to try that. But you’re right, it was more about confused memories of something I only use once or twice a year.

Now, if there was a Macro recorder in Access…
