• .WMZ file type problem

I have been saving some Word documents as web pages. In a particular test case, it appears that Word saves the only (vector .WMF) graphic in a folder, as both a .GIF and a .WMZ file. The associated .XML reads:

Each time I right-click the .WMZ file in Windows Explorer, the latter crashes with the message:
EXPLORER caused an exception eedfadeH in module CONTMENU.DLL at 016f:024e3b22….

First, I’d like to know if anyone has any thoughts on what’s causing the crash. Second, what software can be used to open a .WMZ file? I read that WMZ is a compressed WMF — “Windows metafile”. There is also EMZ which is a compressed EMF — “enhanced metafile”. Supposedly, MS Word will load WMZ files and Visio will too, if renamed to .emz. Anyone have any better info, please?

      Alan,

There is some discussion here about .wmz files in relation to Windows Media Player skins. I don’t know if it will help you to understand what’s going on or not, but thought it was on subject enough to point it out.

Take a look here. There’s a discussion about converting Word docs to XML that might give you some clues.

Thanks Doc. Those links gave me a start to discovering what it is. It appears to be just a .zip archive of a .wmf. I can open and extract the image as a (vector) Windows metafile, if I rename .wmz to .zip. This doesn’t go any ways to explaining why it crashes down Windows Explorer with a right click though. ??? It may be something amiss in the registry, or more likely the ZipGenius archiver I’m using, which is becoming problematic in numerous ways.

Glad I could help. smile That crashing is a puzzle, though you might be right that it has something to do with your Zip program. Perhaps the integration with the shell has become corrupt ?? Have you tried removing it and reinstalling ??

Yes, that crash is weird. I can even rename the extension (only in DOS!) and it will still crash on right-click. Each time I try to access it through Windows, I get a sharing violation or similar. I might try to reproduce this with another document, to see if it’s just this file, or the filetype generally.

From what I understood when I read the info on those links it’s more than likely the file type and not the individual file. I don’t recall if it was an article I linked to or not, but I read in my search that when converting web pages to Word documents this file type was almost always the result when saved. I’ll see if I can find the page again.
