I am trying to set up wireless access for a laptop in my house.

I have a Netgear wirelss 4-port router, connected to the net via ADSL and the main PC via an ethernet cable. That all works fine.

Our laptop is a centrino powered Acer jobbie but it cannot pick up the existence of a wirlesss network.

The Router is not set to only accept specific connections, and the ‘wireless’ light is on indicating that it is working.

I borrowed my mothers laptop yesterday. It works wirelessly at her house using a USB Buffalo receiver on the laptop and a Belkin wirelss router. It failed to pick up a network at my house.

I have spent hours looking at all the settings I can find, but to no avail.

Help? Until I get this set up I keep having to surrender the main PC to my wife, prteventing me from playing my online games! 🙁

    Thanks

    Matt

What are the model numbers for the router and card?
Is the router set to send G and B signals?
Is your laptop’s adapter set to do the same?
Does your laptop/card work at your mother’s house?

The router is a Netgear DG834G and is set to send G and B signals.
The card in the laptop is a ‘PRO/WirelessLAN2100 38 Mini PCI Adaptor (according to ‘properties’ anyway).
Don’t know how to set (or check) the laptops signals 🙁
I have not tried the laptop at my parents. DOH! I will try that as soon as poss. Unfortunately the laptop has gone away on business for a week lol.

        Thanks for your reply.

Just to follow up in case anyone cared, the problem is solved.

The laptop had a PHYSICAL switch on the outside of the case to enable/disable wireless. So even if all the software was configured correctly, and it was, no connection was established until the switch was flipped.

          DOH!
