I need help! I have a 700 mhz machine with 512mb ram running WinXP. I have a wireless Linksys router that is hooked into my main computer, and have my kids computers hooked up to broadband via wireless USB adapters. They all receive good signals, and I have had no issues with their connections. However, on my third machine, I have tried a Linksys USB adapter and never could get it to connect. I thought maybe there was an issue within the operating system, so I had a fresh load of XP put on the machine. I even went to a MS adapter because I have had good luck with them. Anyway, yesterday, I hooked up the MS adapter, and followed the instructions explicity. The internet set up fine, and the internet gateway and wireless connection icons appeared in the Network Neighborhood. Even though the signal was low, I was connected. However, I left the machine and came back, and the connection was gone….not low or anything…just said the wireless signal did not exist. I tried a system restore, and uninstalled, and then reinstalled the adapter. Never did receive the internet gateway icon again, and it still says the network signal does not exist. The settings on the router and the other adapters are all correct, and this adapter mirrors them. I don’t know what it is with this computer, but it has been contrary. I thought maybe it was a flaw in the operating system, but it is now doing it after I have a fresh load of the OS. I have spent HOURS trying to make this work! CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP???

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

It is in the same room where another connected pc works fine. (small bedroom) It was in another room further from the base station before, so it was moved. That isn’t the issue. It worked initially, although with a weak signal, but then something in the pc or its software caused the signal to no longer be recognized although the hardware was working fine.

AskWoody LoungerMay 4, 2004 at 11:51 am #823054An easier way to check would be to move the wireless router to a differant place, change the direction of the attenia. If that does not work then log onto your Linksys router through a computer that is connected and check to see if the router has the computer listed in its’ list. go to DHCP then at the bottom of the window click on DHCP Client List),You should be able to release and renew this list also. It takes a few minutes to reset so be patient. If that does not work let us know and we will try something else!

AskWoody LoungerMay 17, 2004 at 2:50 pm #828356Doesn’t seem to be an adapter or router problem, because they both work elsewhere. Someone suggested I install a new USB card. Perhaps the USB connection in the machine is bad. It is very funny that both times (With 2 different adapters) that the wireless connection existed for a short time after initial install, and then just disconnected itself. It then would not allow me to make the connection again. The device manager shows the hardware device is connected, but for some reason it is not recognizing the network.

AskWoody_MVPMay 22, 2004 at 1:33 pm #831076Do you have “Hibernation” or any other “Power saving” items turn on?
If so, USB connections are knonw for losing connection and not found again.
As for the icon, did you add the required check mark to display the icon?
