WinXP Continues to Update

I recently completed a fresh install of WinXP SP3 in VirtualBox. After installation, it went through the update process and, I assumed, that it installed all the updates available up to the “end of support” date. However, occasionally it will download and install a few more. Is it still downloading pre-end-of-support updates or is something else going on. Ultimately, I plan to keep the network disabled. However, I want it to have all the available updates before doing that.

It’ll take two or three sessions to do all the updates.

Incidentally, if you want to reinstall XP again, there’s a tool to download all the post-SP3 updates in one go, which you can use to make a slipstreamed disk using nlite.

I do have an install disk that includes sp 1, 2, & 3. I understand there are disks available that also include all updates. I’ve been meaning to look into that. Thanks for the reminder.

BTW, my installation of WinXP as guest in Virtualbox is running my favorite Windows based CAD program beautifully. I also tried to run Sketchup without success. I understand that Sketchup is not officially supported in a virtual environment and others are also unable to run it there.

The security updates that could be installed are intended for Windows Embedded and Windows Server 2003 customers and do not fully protect Windows XP customers. Windows XP customers also run a significant risk of functionality issues with their machines if they install these updates, as they are not tested against Windows XP. The best way for Windows XP customers to protect their systems is to upgrade to a more modern operating system, like Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

That does make sense, but if you want to take the risk anyway, you can find the hack and more information from the ZDNet article.
