I’ve got a flash drive that works perfectly in Windows XP (laptop) but when I plug it in on my Windows 7 computer (desktop) it keeps going off and on. It shows for a few seconds and then goes off and keeps repeating that. Anyone have any ideas why it does that in Windows 7 and not XP?

It sounds to me like you need an updated driver.

Trevor, would you be so kind as to supply the name of the flash drive you are trying to use? I have 2 Lexar jump drives that work in XP, Vista and also now on my Win 7 Pro install on my Toshiba laptop.

Have you looked into the Event Viewer? Any errors showing up?

Is it a possibility that it could be a power issue? I know some drives come with two USB connections, one for data and one for power.

Have you tried another USB port?

Are you able to try this on a similar system to see if you get the same results?

It seems that a lot of us are having issues with external drives not working properly. No root cause found yet.

I’ve had USB ports go bad. Have you tried changing to another USB Port or to a port on another computer?

It sounds like you may have outdated flash drives. Either the drivers, or the hardware. With the cost of new flash drives as low as they are now, the easiest method may be to chuck the flash drive and purchase new. I just got a 4 gb PNY for $20. Spring for the new and save some hassles.

Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit on a Dell Laptop would not recognize my external (SATA) HDD connected by USB.
I deleted it’s entry in the Device Manager and re-booted with it attached. That worked.
