Note: I originally posted this message on the Dell Forum, but I’m hedging my bets and probing for ideas from this end.

I am at my wits end. I don’t know exactly where to post this problem so I picked this spot. I recently acquired a used Dell Dimension 4600 in good condition. At the same time I acquired an HP Photosmart 7960. My OS is Windows XP. The problem: I can’t install the printer. The printer works fine, it just doesn’t seem to want to work on the PC. I went to the HP chat. We tried everything, twice. They suggested the problem wasn’t the printer but the PC. That’s why I’m here. The Photosmart is listed as compatible with Win XP. When I try to use the Add Wizard and print a test page, page fails to print. When I try to download installation software from the HP website, it makes it to step 3 before I run into this roadblock: “Invalid command line argument. Consult the Windows Installer SDK for detailed command line help.” Then everything installed up to that point gets uninstalled. I’ve exhausted the HP option. I can’t do Windows chat because the greed heads charge money. I can’t get on Dell chat for some strange reason. I was on HP chat for two days trying to fix this, so you can see how desperate I am. I have two good pieces of equipment that just won’t talk to each other. I don’t want to send a perfectly good printer to the junkyard. Something, somewhere is keeping these two apart. Help!
