Just had a disconcerting happening. I went to the Windows Update page for my nifty new IBM G40 laptop, and downloaded and installed a couple of “critical” updates that “rolled in” previous security updates for XP and Outlook Express.
When I logged in after the auto reboot, my password didn’t work. I tried to enter another “administrator” account and discovered that the keyboard had become “scrambled” and that the account name had numbers in place of SOME letters., which was why my password didn’t work.
Am now in the process of an IBM “Rapid Restore” and hope this cleans up the problem.
I just wanted to let everyone know that there MAY be a problem with these MS “inclusive” updates.
On the other hand, it may be a problem with the laptop, which I’ll find out after the restoration.

Yup … the IBM Rapid Restore fixed the keyboard scramble problem.

Suggest being very careful about downloading the latest “critical” updates.

Dick,
Were these updates just the “critical” security updates, or did they also include MS recommended device driver updates? I am surprised that any security updates would “scramble” your keyboard, but I can certainly understand that some of the MS device driver updates might have a negative effect. I make it a rule of thumb NEVER to install MS driver updates. I always use updated drivers only from the manufacturers’ sites, especially considering the multitude of proprietary or “product specific” devices which are included in laptops.

It also may be at least partly a problem with the laptop and happening immediately after the updates was coincidence.

As soon as I get sufficiently restored will look up and post the names of the 2 updates.

The updates were termed “High Priority Updates” and not “Critical” … My bad! (although I’m not sure of the difference!?)

1. Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows XP (KB826939)
2. Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP1 (KB823353)

I was pretty upset when everything went south and misspoke. Sorry about that.

I think “High Priority” is now the current wording on the Windows Update site. Are you running XP Service Pack 1 or XP Service Pack 2? If you are not running SP2, I’d be tempted to download and install it. If you have a broadband connection (it’s a large download), you can obtain it here . Don’t be scared off by the instructions that say that this is only for network installations. It will work on any configuration. A large majority of the problems which some people encountered when installing SP2 were installs from the Windows Update site. I haven’t heard of any when using the larger package.

Might be an idea to check IBM’s support site first to see if there are any caveats regarding SP2 for your particular computer. As well as new fixes and security enhancements, SP2 contains all of the updates prior to SP2. Once SP2 is installed, then go to Windows Update to see if any further updates are required. Hope this helps.

Am now running SP1 and have ordered SP@ cd-rom from MS.

Will check with IBM before installing SP2.
