Windows XP Error Message

When XP shuts down, I get the following error message:
svchost.exe Application Error
The instruction at 0X00000019 references memory at 0x00000019. The memory could not be read. Click to terminate the application.

My performance does not seem to be affected in any way, but I sure would like to know what this is and how to get rid of it. I upgraded Win98SE to WinXP Pro.

If you mean you put XP on top of 98, this could be the problem. The two OSs are entitrely different – they have none of their code in common. In spite of what MS say, you end up with a tangled mess of complicated work-arounds. I would suggest you start again from scratch – install 98 first (if you still want it – it has its uses) and install XP from within 98, but to a different logical drive. You will need, of course, sufficient HD space.
This way you’ll get a dual-boot system (without laying out more cash) which is far more stable than your present arrangement. If you leave it as it is, you can almost count on having more problems with it in the future. Sorry to sound so negative.

svchost = service host – without knowing what program is causing it to crash, it’s hard to guess at the fix.

enter this is the run command on the start menu:
cmd /k tasklist /SVC

and you’ll see a list of what programs are using the svchost. from looking at technet, it looks like it might be a communications device that is causing the error – but if your list is like mine, most of the things listed are comm devices.

did you have and fax or telephony programs installed in win98?

The only change that I have made recently was the conversion from @home to attbi. Could the new settings for the new cable provider be the cause? I followed their configuration instructions to the letter. Everything works ok, but I hate getting this message.

Thanks for the tip, but I really don’t want to re-install and have dual boot. Any other thoughts?
