Tough question, but the deck is stacked in favor of giving XP the heave-ho.InfoWorld Tech Watch.

      Woody,
Won’t Redmond be spawning millions of Typhoid Marys — spreading malware because MS won’t inoculate them?

      @Morty

They will, but it remains to be seen if they care enough to fix the problem.

The “fix” will probably be an upgrade to MSE/ Windows Defender for Windows 7 and Windows 8/RT.

Also, it has been common practice for websites to restrict or refuse logins by browser type or version. Hence, if IE 9 were the cutoff point, and similar cutoffs for Chrome and Firefox, nearly all Windows XP users would be effectively banned from all the websites where most folks go on a regular basis. This more than the cutoff of security updates, would be the signal that the Windows Community is serious about dumping Windows XP.

      Woody,

I know many people, (incl. myself!),
who are finally moving to Ubuntu or Mint Linux, in April, 2014.
      Forever.

We are being pushed out by MS itself,
with their complete lack of vision of what common Users want and need…

No reason to throw more money at MS, for their new unstable and vulnerable OSes.

My *fully patched* XP works perfectly,
      and it’s no more vulnerable
than Win 7 or Win 8.

So, why should Users go through the pain of dropping XP and buying Win 8?

No more XP monthly Security Updates?
      Good-bye MS,
      and Hello Linux!

Between Windows 8 and Linux, there’s quite a dilemma.

Do we want to learn just the new Win 8 interface, or do we want to learn a whole new OS, whose support is based on scattered communities all over the Internet? Or maybe for mobile deivces, just put up with Android, which is Linux without Root Access, so only a select subset of Linux features is suported?

Choices have to be made, and each choice has its pros and cons.

For myself, a full laptop may not serve my mobile needs as well as a 10 inch tablet. But I HATE Vendor lock-in and having very few user configuration options. So Linux and root-access enabled Android looks like a nice Tablet solution. Yes, there’s the Linux Learning Curve, and not everything in Linux works on ARM architecture. But FREEDOM has a cost, eh?

I’ll keep Windows 7 or Windows 8 Pro on my big laptop, but for any future mobile device, I’ll definitely be thinking of a Linux-Android Tablet (with Root Access) as my Windows XP replacement.

And I won’t be buying anything in all likelihood for another year or two, just in case new advances in Small Tech change the picture yet again.

The Death of Windows XP need not be cause for mourning or fretting. When one OS door closes, several others may open.

I definitely will NOT be moving to any Linux OS in 2014, unlike what SFtrends was saying earlier.

I will be converting any old XP machines I have left to at least Vista SP2 or Win7 SP1 but certainly not Win8.
