I have three computers which I schedule to backup every night between 4 and 5 am. One is an old HP Envy running Windows 10 and two are machines I built last year running Windows 11. They all are backed up to a file server using Veeam Windows backup.
The HP wakes at the scheduled time and performs the backup then goes back to sleep as it should.
The second machine is built with an ASUS Prime Z690-P motherboard, Intel Core i7-12700 CPU and 64GB DDR4 memory currently running Windows 11. This machine is scheduled to wake at 04:30 and do it’s backup. But it never wakes at that time! It always wakes anywhere between about 4 minutes and 15 minutes after its scheduled wake time. After much hair pulling and online searching I could not find the answer to this problem so I put a trouble ticket into ASUS. They could not solve the problem so issued an RMA to return the motherboard. But as it would cost me more money to return the motherboard than to buy a new one, I bought a new board.
This new board is a Gigabyte Z690 AORUS Elite AX DDR4. So I replaced the ASUS with the Gigabyte, rebuilt the machine and scheduled my backup. The backup worked exactly the same on this new board as the old one. Waking anywhere from 3 to 15 minutes late, but never on time!
The amount of time that it wakes late seems to depend upon the amount of time it was sleeping. For example, if I put them machine to sleep at noon the previous day, then it wakes about 15 minutes late. However, if I’m working late and put the machine to sleep at 6 or 7 pm, then it wakes only 3 or 4 minutes late. It seems that the longer it sleeps, the later the lag is in when it wakes.
Eventually I put the ASUS board back in the original computer and built a new computer with the Gigabyte motherboard, a Core i5-13500 and another 64GB of DDR4 memory. I have been running both machines now and they both react the same way; waking late.
On both machines I have created simple Window Task Scheduler jobs which are scheduled to run 20 minutes before the scheduled backup. These jobs wake the machine and then exit without going back to sleep. The the scheduled backup jobs seem to always start very close the their scheduled wake-up time, backup the computer and then put it to back to sleep.
Has anybody else seen these type of symptoms and might have an inkling as to why it is happening. I would very much appreciate some help. By the way, even though both machines are using Z690 BIOS’s, the only tweak I’m using on both machines is XMP.
Thank you
