    ya’ know?…

I’m really starting to question the logic behind Windows Update.

I’m running XP Pro…& I really don’t want to use the automatic function…so I do an ‘express install’…and…

…(aside from the fact that they now have to install new install software, every doggone time, before you can even download & install the updates)…

in my list are SP2 updates for MS Office. I’m thinkin’…wait a minute…I have SP3…why do they want to update SP2, for MS Office…???…&…why would anyone want to bust into my PC & mess w/ my stupid Word documents anyway…???

but I figure they know what they’re doing…so I let ‘er rip.

I come out of the shower…& the whole thing has come to a grinding stop because it wants to download & install Internet Explorer 8. So…I’m not sure if I want v8…not knowing if it’s geared toward XP or Vista…choose NO…

    …& after the downloads resume & install…

…it tells me in did NOT install (in addition to IE8) the MS Office suite SP2 patch [~!@#$%^&*()!!*!].

it’s almost not worth the effort anymore…let these hackers bust into my system & take what they want…’cause this whole protection thing is getting too complicated.

    frustrated,

    mf

You’ve got to mind the store.
I never use automatic. Just set it to notify only, and be present while it goes through the process of installing
the stuff you have chosen to instal.

XP is at SP3 release and then about 60 odd patches since it was released, Office 2003 stopped at SP2 and has 2007 at present (completely different service pack). I find that doing custom always helps so you can see what its asking to do, and untick things like IE8 if you do not wish to install at this time, express gives you no choice and it hammers away and adds everything selected, and you don’t get to see the optional add-ons such as Root Certificate & .Net updates etc….

also get yourself a good disk defrag program such as Defraggler (free and very good even has 64bit option), once you have done your updates, always best to defrag the drive to keep the system optimised and as responsive as possible.

FYI, Office 2003 had SP3 and Office 2007 is currently at SP2. Both have a substantial number of fixes beyond the last service pack.
