Now here’s a strange quirk. All of a sudden I can’t down load any updates from the Windows Update site. I can get there ok. It shows me the updates I don’t have, but the “DOWNLOAD” button is greyed out, (not blue like usual),
I can check the files I want to download, but it says near the “DOWNLOAD” button “no files have been selected”. And when I click on the DOWNLOAD button nothing happens. What’s up? I mentioned this to my ISP and he suggested I need to reinstall the application that runs the Windows Update process. But where do I find it? He suggested CNet.com but I can’t find it there. What exactly is the name of the program or files I need? It’s hard to locate without the correct name. Any suggestions and/or help would be highly appreciated.

WINUP-Problems When Viewing or Downloading From Windows Update -

GuestFebruary 24, 2001 at 11:04 am #1779198Thanks for your response. I tried ALL of the suggestions in the WINUP except to download the MS VM because the link to download it was either incorrect or the page changed with no new link. I did remember the last time I was able to download MS VM I kept the original file, so I found it on my computer and installed it, but it didn’t help anything. I read in the WINUP that it’s referring to build 3186. I checked the version of the one I have a copy of and it’s version is 5.00.3188. Does that mean Build 3188?
If so then I’ve got a newer one than suggested in the WINUP? Re-installing it didn’t correct my situation. I also noticed the “Show installed updates” button did nothing, neither did the “Personalize” button. I was able to use the “Installation History” button however. Go figure.
Another strange thing. In the WINUP it suggests deleting all files in the Windows Update folder EXCEPT “wuhistv3.log” because it contains a record of previous downloads. I would guess this is the file WIN UPDATE uses to see what new updates you don’t have. Well then why is it in my update history that I have installed NewMeeting 3.01 YET that is one of the files is is offering me to download for an update? Now the fact is that even though I have downloaded it from the update site, I have since deleted it from my computer. That would mean that the win update site is not reading the .log file but actually checking out my computer or at least the Registry, RIGHT? Well here I am getting long winded again, sorry.
As usual if you have any further suggestions or hopefully a solution it would be highly appreciated. Thanks. -

GuestFebruary 26, 2001 at 5:00 am #1779271Well that certainly did the trick! All’s well! However, another curious note: (Thought you might be interested): When I got the to the part about deleting any “Damaged files” in the Windows/Downloaded Program Files Folder, all the files there showed installed and NONE showed Damaged. But since the instructions said that:”Once you access the Windows Update Site these files will be re-installed.” I figured what the heck, I’ll just delete them all right now. Well all BUT 2 deleted, with an error message popping up saying: “These Program files are currently being used by one or more programs. Please close some programs and try again. You may need to restart Windows.” The names of the files are: Conveyor Control & MCSATMenu CtL Class. Both showed: Status: Installed & Total Size: (none). Understand I have set Windows Explorer to show ALL HIDDEN FILES and double checked it to make sure it was still operating in that mode. I went to DOS and did a “dir” on the folder and Whoa! There are a bunch more files in that folder than windows shows. Mostly all *.ocx files. A couple I recognized from WinTune if you know what that is. I tried deleting the previously stated two files but received the afore mentioned error message. I went back to Windows Explorer/Windows/Downloaded Program Files Folder, and right clicked on each of the two files and then clicked on Properties. The Gereral Tab: ID: showed {DC840BE3-16D9-11D0-Ba39-00C04FDDB4C0} for Converyor Control & {14C63F64-BD11-11D1-97D0-00A0C9153594} for MCSATMenu CtL Class. Both showed Created: none, Last Accessed: none, Total Size: 0 (none), Status: Installed. The Dependency Tab showed the same for both files: File Name: C:Windowsoccache*, Size: Damaged, All other info lines showed: none or unknown. Lastly, once I had downloaded from WinUpDate site, I expected that, as the WINUP said, that the files I deleted in this folder would be re-installed. That is not the case. There are presently still only the two damaged files in this folder. However now when I right click on these two files I have a third option: Update. Which I intent to do right after I finish thanking you once again for your assistance which is exceeded only by your kindness and intelligence. I think you’ll understand when I say that, I hope I never have to ask for your help again. But if I have a problem I certainly know where to get knowledgeable help. Thank You So MUCH! Who ever you work for isn’t paying you enough!
