This is a new issue, but maybe linked to:

    https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/using-wushowhide-and-group-policy-editor-not-showing-updates-in-windows-update/

    This is new installation of Windows 10 Pro 21H2 and I was setting up control of how Windows updates;

    Group Policy Editor settings

    1. “Configure Automatic Updates” is Enabled and “Configure automatic updating” to “2” (Notify for download and auto install).
    2. “Do not include drivers with Windows Updates” is Enabled.

    Windows Update settings (see image).

    1. Turned ON “Restart this device as soon as possible….”
    2. Turned OFF “Download updates over metered connections…”

Problem:  With the above settings (and without doing anything else) I was prompted to immediately restart (and install) the October 2022 update.

Question:  Not sure why this happened.  Is this caused by the switch for “Restart this device as soon as possible…”?   What the heck is that switch for?

    Thanks,

    Mike

Problem: With the above settings (and without doing anything else) I was prompted to immediately restart (and install) the October 2022 update.

      Your problem lies here:

Turned ON “Restart this device as soon as possible….”

By all means have the Show a notification when your PC requires a restart to finish updating switch enabled to let you know when it’s ready to reboot, but Restart this device as soon as possible… will do exactly as you described.

Is this caused by the switch for “Restart this device as soon as possible…”? What the heck is that switch for?

For users who wish to leave their PC unattended to do something else while it downloads & installs updates, allowing it to restart on its own.

So, best thing to have is:
Restart this device as soon as possible… – OFF
Show a notification when your PC requires… – ON

Restart this device as soon as possible… – OFF
Show a notification when your PC requires… – ON

You don’t need either of these settings to be anything but “Not Configured”
Please look at the settings in AKB2000016 – those are the only settings you need.
Sections 3-5 pertain to Win10 Pro, but the first two Sections will help you understand.
Look at the screenshots at the bottom of the Topic.

You are your own worst enemy by arbitrarly turning on/off settings in Group Policy.

Thanks for the information.  Like I said you probably get tired of reading questions that you’ve answered in the AKB guide.  My excuse is even though I’ve read it dozens of times and read the comments, two things happen to me:

        1.  Sometimes it just doesn’t sink in; maybe because it’s basically one long page and somewhat overwhelming.  Screenshots made the difference.  2. Too many opinions in the linked comments are (sometimes) confusing.

My thought for the Guide:  I’d have separate posts:  Two for the Pro version (before “whatever version” and after) and same with the Home version.  Four separate posts rather than all together on one threaded page.

I certainly don’t want to nitpick the extensive “manual” you made.  Just my 5 cents.

“You are your own worst enemy by arbitrary turning on/off settings in Group Policy.”

I’m pretty careful, by using a test machine and was curious about “Restart this device as soon as possible…”.  Still the wording was what didn’t make sense to me and I was curious.  Nothing was arbitrary.

Regardless of having the correct settings for Windows Update, GPE and using WUShowHide, I’m still seeing an issue with (never been hidden) updates not appearing in the queue.  I’ll post that problem in a new post once I have all the facts.

You are obviously right in what you say; it was from you I learnt how to get a handle on Windows Update in Win10. However, the two settings I referenced are not in Group Policy, but in the switch toggles in Windows Update > Advanced options. I would never suggest making changes to Group Policy willy-nilly.
