• Windows update setting greyed out

I’m running Windows 10 Pro x64  v.1909, but this was happening on 1903. too. On the WU page the pause option is greyed out. On the advanced option page Pause updates is greyed out with ‘select date’ in the field. The ‘choose when feature update is installed’  is also greyed out as is the quality update field. I recently changed the quality update days to 21. It shows 30 days in the greyed out field.  I also have enabled the download but not install option.

Back when 1903 was installed I started following the suggestions for editing group policy. I have since lowered the number of days to defer, etc. and now I’m not sure If they’re still correct or if I really need them all.

I want to be able to use the pause updates on the initial WU page (currently greyed out) to postpone cumulative (monthly) updates and delay Feature updates.

What is best practice now? I see Woody recommends pausing for 21 days but I can’t do that with the setting greyed out. Very confused

I’d appreciate any help getting this figured out!

    Thanks

The settings in the WU GUI are grayed out because you have changed settings in Group Policy. These are the GUI settings and the Group Policy settings I would recommend (Semi-Annual channel is no longer available) and why I made those choices. To have the GIU settings available, you have to set the equivalent GP settings back to default. The only GP settings is the “2” (notify download/install).
With these settings I have never had forced CUs or Feature updates. When you want to upgrade to the next version, you simply lower the Feature deferral to allow it to appear.

      Thank you PKCano,

I was able to upgrade 1809 to 1903 but my attached picture with Group Policy in the  ‘Windows Updates for Business’  caused the Advanced Settings  deferrals to be  Grayed out  and un-usable,  until I changed the ‘for Business’  Group Policy back to “Not Configured”.  I still have the ‘Configure Updates’  set to #2 Notify before download and install.  I had made the mistake of not using  wushowhide, and I clicked the “Check for Updates”  – but thanks to PKCano, I now have it working ok. P.S. – PKCano, there is a gift for you over there at that January 13th / 16th post.  🙂
