    I’m running Win 10 Pro 21h21

Back when Win 21h22 was about to come out I think I made some setting changes, as advised in Ask Woody, that would postpone it.  It is still postponed.  Update doesn’t work at all actually.

This message is at eh top of the update page: “some settings are managed b your organization”

Below update is says “Your device is missing important security and quality fixes.”

Pressing the update button gets a line of dots going by for a bit then nothing.
I assume that it thinks an admin needs to run this.  I’m the admin on this stand alone laptop.

      Download Windows 10

Go there. On that top section where it says “update now” click on it, download the file and run it.

You used either a registry setting or an Incontrol tool to keep you on 21H2. You need to be on 22H2.

Don’t download the ISO. but do click on update now.

I have clicked on Update now button.  Except for a few dots going across the screen a few times, nothing happens.

There is no indication that any file has been downloaded.

I agree that I must have used a registry setting to keep me on 21h1.  But I have no idea where that would be or what to do to reset it so update will work.

It sure is InControl. That notification appeared when I set Incontrol target to Win 22H2.

I run Win22H2 and should be eligible to Win 11 but haven’t seen the note to upgrade for a while. I understand that Incontrol hides that note but it wasn’t there before I set the target to 22H2 either. It was there say a year ago.
So what happens if I set target to Win 11 24H2 or set the Incontrol “off” (I suppose Windows should not force update Win 11 if I don’t want but I set target to 22H2 just to be certain?)

As Susan pointed out, if you used InControl.exe to set your preferred version to 21H2, you’ll need to change it to 22H2.

You do this by pressing the Release Control button, change the Release from 21H2 to 22H2, and then press the Take Control button.

      InControl

If that’s not applicable to your situation, then click the View configured update policies text displayed right below the *Some setting are managed by your organization message and it’ll display all the Policies set on your device and you can change whichever one is causing update not to finish.

If you’re not sure which one it is, post a list of them here and we should be able to help.

BTW, have you/did you ever use wumgr.exe?

If so, there’s some options that can cause this sort of problem if they were set and, since it’s not an installed problem, deleting it won’t restore them to their default values.

Just FYI for everyone who reads this thread…

Having even one update setting value different that Window’s defaults will cause the *Some setting are managed by your organization message to appear on the Updates screen!

Thanks for the more detailed reply.

I know that I did not use “In Control.’  It had to be some registry change that I saw in this newsletter back then.

When I his the ‘View Configuration Update Policies link,’ all I get is the following:

“Policies for your Device: Target Release Versions for your device:

        Source: Administrator

        Type: Group Policy

        Target versions for future updates

        Source: Administrator

        Type: Group Policy’ ”

If I knew which Group Policy to change I’d give it a try there.

I still think it’s something I changed in the Registry.

GPEdit : Administrative Updates – Windows Components – Windows Updates – Windows Update for Business – Select the Target Feature Update Version.

Just set this to Windows 10. Leave feature version empty.
      Or
Use Incontrol to set to Windows 10 22H2 which will override any previous settings.

Thanks for the reply.  Unfortunately I don’t see any of the things in my Group Policy Editor you mention.  Here’s a screen shot.  Am I in  the right place?

Click on Administrative Templates in the left hand panel. Then click on Windows Compnents, etc. This will finally get you to Select the Target Feature update version

    • #2757372

Group Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Windows Update for Business > Select the target Feature Update version

The specific registry entries it sets are:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
      TargetReleaseVersion
      TargetReleaseVersionInfo

TargetReleaseVersion & TargetReleaseVersionInfo are simple text values as follows:

        TargetReleaseVersion = Windows 10 or Windows 11

        TargetReleaseVersionInfo = 21H2 or 22H2 for Windows 10, 23H2 or 24H2 for Windows 11

Thanks so much.  Change made.  I’ll reboot and see what happens.

I hope the note that an admin had to do it goes away.

Am I in  the right place?

On the left side drill down starting with Administrative Updates..
      Or use the free Incontrol

Update to 22H2 is made.  A pop up arrived asking me to update.  Ran it and 22H2 is now installed.

The note in Updates that “Some setting are managed by your organization”  is still there.  I would like to make that go away so I can run updates normally.

Thank you all for your help.

That message tells you that you have made changes in Group Policy. If you remove the settings you have made in Group Policy, that message will go away. But you will no longer have the protection provided. For example, it you remove the “Windows 10” and the “22H2,” and your computer is eligible for Win11, you may find Microsoft has installed Win11 on your computer.

If you click on that message, it should tell you what settings you have changed.

The note in Updates that “Some setting are managed by your organization” is still there. I would like to make that go away so I can run updates normally.

As I noted above in my post #2757337, Having even one update setting value different that Window’s defaults will cause the *Some setting are managed by your organization message to appear on the Updates screen.

In your case, it’s being displayed because you have the following Group Policies set to Windows 10 22H2.

Target release version for feature updates
      Source: Administrator
      Type: Group Policy

Target product version for feature updates
      Source: Administrator
      Type: Group Policy

And, as @PKCano pointed out above, if you remove it, the message will disappear but then you’d lose control over how/when updates are applied (i.e. all new updates would get automatically installed!)

Thank you!  I think I understand it now.  Your last post really clarified it for me.

I set group Policies to Win 10 22H!  I think that will let any Win 10 update happen butt stop Win11 from installing automatically.  The message is still there but Now I know why and I’m ok since I have it under control now.

You have all been very helpful.  I can’t say thanks enough.
