For the last few days, I haven’t been able to download new Win7 updates from MS,
When I try, I get a message “Code 80072F78 Windows Update Encountered an Unknown Error.” I Googled on this and on “Win7 Update Problems” but didn’t find anything that worked (including a thread in this forum).
I tried the MS “Windows Fixit Troubleshooter” and other MS help sites – they didn’t find anything wrong.
I ran a few online virus scans – nothing (by the way, Microsoft Security Essentials downloaded the latest AV data with no problems).
I ran diskcheck and system file check, and nothing came up.
I even did a system restore to a point that I thought was before this problem started.
But the problem remains. Anyone know how to fix it?

Is the date & time correct on your system?

      Yes!

Most of what I’ve seen about that error code talks about Internet connections issues. Are you having any in general?

Have you seen Got error 80072f78, 80090305 or 8009033f while downloading Windows update 80072F78?

No problems with internet. I’ve read (I think) most of the posts discussing this problem that are on the internet. But in one of the MS Fixit things that I ran, I got a code 8004FE2C error. This had a link to the “Microsoft Automated Troubleshooting Diagnostic” which I ran. It said “Troubleshooting couldn’t identify the problem.” So I’m no wiser.

Have you tried the manual steps to reset Windows Update at How do I reset Windows Update components??

    • #1445915

Yes. I tried that. Didn’t change anything. But thanks anyway, Joe.

You could try contacting Microsoft. Help for Windows Update is free.

If you don’t want to contact Microsoft then you may have to do a repair install of Win7.

Is Event Viewer reporting any related Errors ?

    • #1445929

Thanks. I may try that. Never done that before. How exactly do you contact MS Help?
I don’t think the problem warrants a Windows repair install. Maybe there’s a workaround where I can get the updates from a different server? As I said in my first post, the update for MSE worked without any problems.

      4 Star Lounger – thanks.
I looked at Event Viewer a few days ago. I must admit that I didn’t know what I was looking at. There are so many events listed, that I can’t tell what’s relevant and what isn’t.

Download MiniToolBox and check the boxes for –

        Report IE Proxy Setting
        List contents of Hosts
List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors
        List Installed Programs
List Minidump files – Joe will probably be able to interpret those.

It will open a Notepad file report when completed.

Expand the window if minimized then right click in a blank text area – click on Select all then right click again and select Copy and then you can Paste the report into the Reply box.

I had a problem with Windows Update failing to install an update to Internet Explorer about a month ago.

It turned out to be a conflict with Avast AV and Online Armor.

To be safe, I downloaded the installer file from the Microsoft KB description page and ran it as administrator. This solved the problem.

There’s a few bits on there that I will need to research further and while I haven’t found anything for that PSKMAD driver, having Babylon on there isn’t going to help.

Follow this tutorial to see if it will get rid of it as it can be quite persistent http://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-babylon-search-virus/

There’s a new version of MBAM released and on initial use, runs a Rootkit scan (Threat Scan) which may be more effective that the previous version.

I’m going to have to shove off for my evening meal but will be back later.

      • #1445953

Something I’ve just noticed between your scan and one that I’ve just done with the latest version and that mine is running from C: and yours is running from D:

After you’ve gotten rid of Babylon and if you have an install disk, boot up with it by tapping F12 (usually) when switching on and move the CD/DVD drive to the top – insert the disk then press Enter.

As it’s loading look out for a quick prompt to press any key to boot from CD/DVD and after confirming the Time Zone and Currency etc. select Repair your Computer and then Command Prompt.

At the command prompt type and enter bcdedit |find “osdevice” and using whichever Partition it displays, enter (assuming C: ) sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C: /offwindir=C:Windows and let us know what it reports.

Edit – just seen your last post which will give me some more time to look up those conflicting devices.

Getting error code,0X8024402C after a update to windows 7. Been chasing it for over 72 hours, to no avail, paid $47+ for a program “Total System Care” fixed a lot, but not this one as it claimed it would do. Updates was the first thing I did each time after 2 installs from scratch. Even after paying MS on my other computer to find it. I think it was caused by net network 4.5 update, took it out went back to #4, and I get my downloads. The computer I’m working on hasn’t got net network in it yet

    • #1445947

Thanks – I’m going to cal it a night soon too. I’ll go along withe getting rid of Babylon, but I’ve had it much longer than I’ve had this problem.
I’ll try your suggestions tomorrow and get back to you.

    • #1445996

Had you downloaded anything recently ?

Check your restore points using the Scan for affected programs to see if anything stands out and make a note of any it picks up on and then try your earliest restore point.

How did you end up with Babylon and were you able to download February’s updates ?

    • #1446123

I removed Babylon – when I installed it a couple of years ago, I was careful to install without any krapware. I used it because I was doing some translation work, but since then I’ve found better alternatives. But the problem remains without Babylon installed.
My disk is partitioned so that usually executable files are on C: and data files are on D; Yesterday I was kind of sloppy and installed MiniToolBox on D: Should that make any difference?
I’m going to wait a bit before I do a repair install. I get very nervous about doing major interventions like that. For me, Windows is a very fragile instrument. I’ll certainly do a full system backup before I do that.

      • #1446124

I think that you are the first person that I’ve come across who has willingly installed Babylon as it normally gets installed as a PuP, because people haven’t read what extra will be bundled with what they were just wanting to download before hitting the Install/Next button.

It looks pretty much that it has managed to do its audit from D: but one of the errors is showing a Bad block on HDD(0).

Can you open a command prompt as an administrator and enter the command chkdsk

This is a read-only mode and will show if any bad files as well as any bad sectors.

If it finds any bad files then it will recommend that you run a chkdsk /f but if the bad files are because of bad sectors then you will need to back up your personal files and run a chkdsk /r which will move what files it can to good sectors, but data can be lost in the process – which is why you should back up any personal stuff first.

To post its output, right click in the text area and click on Select all – press Enter then Paste into the Reply box.

Can you also run Mini Tool Box again with just the button checked for List Devices in default for Only Problems to see what that reports.

    • #1446127

I ran chkdsk (again – I ran it about a week ago) – it doesn’t show any problems. I also ran SFC about a week ago – it also said no problems.

By the way, I don’t think Babylon was any part of my problem. I downloaded it well over a year ago, and all that was there was the translation software (until my trial period ran out about a month later), no Babylon Search Bar or anything like that. I haven’t used it in months, and there was no problem uninstalling it.

This is what I get when I run MiniToolBox – “List Devices – Only Problems” – nothing:
      MiniToolBox by Farbar Version: 23-01-2014
Ran by user (administrator) on 26-03-2014 at 13:59:00
      Running from “D:Installation10Windows Update Fix”
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 (X64)

      What now?

    • #1446136

The system files may be okay but they don’t seem to be working very well together from the Mini Tool Box report.

The Side by Side errors can be caused by a downloaded program or one becoming corrupt, AV updates or an infection.

The bad block error was last reported on 17 March and there are a number of Code Integrity errors of which I’m not familiar with.

I think you may have to do that Repair install, but see if doing a clean boot or running through your restore points as I’ve suggested in Post #18 has any effect.

    • #1446191

I’m going to wait before doing the clean boot until I can get somebody to come here with a laptop so I can follow the instructions for a clean boot while doing it, without screwing anything up.
The same goes for doing a repair install.
Thanks for all your help, and I’ll keep you informed.
I see that one of the code integrity errors spotted by the MiniToolBox scan involved a file called usbaapl64.sys which is used for itunes and its updates. I vaguely remember now accepting an itunes update about the time the problem started. Could this be a problem?

    • #1446251

Yes it could, as I’ve seen where iTunes has caused conflicts before and uninstalling it has resolved the problem, although as not being a user of it, I wasn’t aware it got updates but have seen where MSE or other AV updates have caused problems.

Well spotted! and hope that is the cause.

A quick check would be to uninstall iTunes before waiting for another laptop to follow the procedure for a clean boot.

The clean boot may have eventually identified it if it is the cause as you re-enabled each start up item or non MS service, but it can also be a combination of start up items or non MS services that can cause a conflict, but be okay when just enabled on their own.

    • #1446379

I uninstalled iTunes (wasn’t very quick, and I left parts of apple files on the PC because the Apple instructions on uninstalling iTunes are not complete) but the problem remains. I hope to do a clean boot this weekend. Will keep you informed.

    • #1446384

These are fuller instructions for the other components http://www.wikihow.com/Uninstall-iTunes

      • #1446388

I’ll bet you will find that you are missing the wintab32.dll file in C:WindowsSysWOW64

        C:WindowsSysWOW64

Download a copy and put it in the above folder.

Took me a looong time to track this down for my machine.

    • #1446572

mangurian – are you sure? I am not getting any error messages connected to the wintab32.dl file (I’m not getting any error messages at all, except for the unknown error code 80072F78 when I try to run Windows update). Do I really need this file? I can’t find anything on the net that links it to problems with Windows update.

I’m reviving this thread because the problem may be solved.
I finally got around to doing a “Clean Boot” (not as difficult as I feared) and this is what happened:
I tried installing just one update as a test case, and it worked!
So I went to a regular boot (is it called a “Dirty Boot”?) and tried installing the rest of the updates. Two updates installed, and the rest (over 20 of them) failed with the same inscrutable error code that I had been always getting.
I went to “Clean Boot” again and successfully installed the rest of the updates. I rebooted normally, and Windows seemed to reconfigure correctly, and now I’m up to date on my Windows Updates. The question is, when new Windows Updates come along, will I be able to install them only by doing a “Clean Boot?”
      To be continued…

    • #1447729

With having so many updates to install and with a lot more patience, you may have found the start up program or non-MS service that was causing the problem, by just re-enabling one Startup program at a time and then trying the updates.

If they still fail – do the same with the non-MS services, but at least if you have the same problem this month and the cause is the same – then you have a workaround.

      It’s called a normal boot.

Just thinking back to the MiniToolBox report, now that you have all of the updates, can you open a command prompt as an administrator and enter the command chkdsk to see what that reports.

    • #1447737

Thanks for all the help, Sudo15.
I see what you’re saying about trying out one start-up program at a time, but I just didn’t have the patience – there’s still a life out there someplace.
I did CHLDSK, and it found something wrong, so I ran CHKDSK /F after restart. It may have helped, but the DOS screen went by so quickly that I’m none the wiser.

    • #1447740

The full chkdsk /f report can be found in Event Viewer.

Go Start – type eventvwr – press Enter and wait for it to finish reading the Logs.

Click on Windows Logs/Application then right click on Application – click on Find then type chkdsk into the Find what: box and press Enter, then close the box to read the report.

    • #1447749

I looked at EVENTVWR and the last chkdsk event there. It was just before the WINLOGON rvent, and there was no chkdsk event registered after I rebooted, but there definitely was a chkdsk /f. To keep it short, what that chkdsk said near the end was:
      “Usn Journal verification completed.
The master file table’s (MFT) BITMAP attribute is incorrect.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.”
and “0 KB in bad sectors.”
I assume that this was corrected when I ran chkdsk /f when I rebooted.
So I just ran chkdsk again and it said “Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.”

    • #1447752

Yes, that will have fixed it.

Did you type chkdsk into the Find box ? – typing wininit may also work, but I’ve always associated WINLOGON for the chkdsk report with XP – but I could be wrong.

    • #1447755

Yes. Looking for wininit gives me the chkdsk event as I rebooted (winlogon). There, it says the following:
“Cleaning up 177 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 177 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 177 unused security descriptors.
      Security descriptor verification completed.
      36766 data files processed.

      CHKDSK is verifying Usn Journal…
      36952080 USN bytes processed.

      Usn Journal verification completed.
CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the
      master file table (MFT) bitmap.
Windows has made corrections to the file system.”

Job done for now then, but let us know how you get on with this month’s updates.

    • #1447758

      OK, and thanks again.

    • #1447787

Well, it’s been a long hard grind, but I think the problem is solved.
This morning, I turned on my PC and found that there were two Windows updates waiting for download. So I tried, and of course they didn’t install.
I then took a hard look at my startup items, and found two that looked suspicious. One was Babylon, which I though I had deleted (I had deleted the files, but apparently not the item in the startup list). I disabled that and rebooted, and tried downloading the updates. Didn’t work.
The other suspicious item in the startup list was Hula, I had downloaded Hula at about the time the problem started, and forgotten about it. So I disabled it, rebooted, and the Windows update items installed successfully!
I will wait for the next batch of Windows updates to see what happens then, but everything seems to be working correctly. Thanks again.

    • #1447789

That’s great news and sounds like you’ve finally cracked it.

    • #1447808

Happy to hear things appear to be working again. It might be a good idea to make a Malwarebytes Free (http://www.malwarebytes.org) and a AdwCleaner (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/) run.

      Will try.

Anyone know if when I tell windows to automatically update at a certain time, say 2 am, is it downloading whenever it wants and applies the update at the time I say? I’m stuck on Hughesnet for a while and want the update downloads to occur at a certain time, since our limitless download time is from 2AM to 7AM. Otherwise it wastes my allotted data.

It should check for and install any updates on a daily basis (or whichever day you set) at the time that you set, providing the computer is switched on – otherwise you will get the alert on Shutdown.

    • #1449361

I too am having problems with updates failure. I’m almost about to stop updating anything for Windows and take my chances! I have tried and the updates have failed 5 consecutive times. I had to log-in online for this new security Microsoft has set up, because each time there was a problem with the codes emailed to me. I’ve received three calls with the codes and they work but I’m redirected right back to where I started for another verification of who I am and it starts all over again… Microsoft’s website seem to have been hacked. Another thing, why does the updates download each time they fail, they download again each time using up my data usage that is costly!

If the downloads are actually downloading then where are they once the installation fails? Did this five times, if they are downloaded why are they not kept on the computer? Does this have anything to do with them being downloaded in the background or is there an attempt by Microsoft to download them from their servers onto my Computer? I used up 157.8 MB with these failures, I’m not Bill Gates or Microsoft and have money to waist. Has anyone else had problems, in the last two weeks trying to get their updates to install?

    • #1449365

Have you also tried the updates in a clean boot as it could also be something in your Start up menu that is conflicting ?

It’s a good question about where they are when the install fails, but running Disk Cleanup as an administrator may clean out something then try them again in a clean boot.

Is there an alternative ISP you could use that doesn’t charge in this way or one that has better terms ?

      Hi xelaw!

I had a problem with Windows Update one time on a W7 machine. After doing a lot of things you did, I found that what worked was to do the following:

      1. Create a restore point (for peace of mind).
      2. Go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistributiondatastore and delete all the files there.
      3. Go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistributiondownload and delete all the files there too.

This basically cleans out all the temporary and pending updates. When you try updates again it should work. Of course, YMMV.

      Good luck!

Thanks for the response  It open another door for me to explore. Bottom line it didn’t work. Set a restore SOP. What I have done is track down old XP, and deleted all files. Restart, did a Windows update, still there. MS tried for 3 days and failed. Next step?

    • #1453198

Did MS apply the applicable fixit or manual steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883821 ?

Should it be something on your computer, you could retry the updates in a clean boot to see if that makes any difference.

Prior to disabling all non MS services or start up items, make a note of any already stopped so that you don’t waste time by re-enabling them when it comes to trouble shooting each item should the clean boot do the job.

      • #1453283

Done 3 repairs, didn’t work, I’m working on my 3rd fresh install, no luck. Can’t get on the internet with my wireless stick. I can get from Belarc advisors updates required, then to to ms dwnld & save and put them in manually.

So are you using another machine to post on the forum or are you wired up ?

          • #1453304

Nooooooooooooooooooo I’m not wired, I perform CPR on computers for my friends, as a hobby, since I’ve retired. So, I have my putter, beside the one I’m working on to be able to do what’s necessary. Now that I reread what I said I can understand the confusion, try being in my shoes, at my age….HA HA. Managed to find the problem, I’m missing a driver, and the updates got turn off some how, on the putter I’m working on. It’s a Dell, and they were no help the P 8 years old. Originally it had XP, a hot copy by someone who didn’t know what he was doing, now it has a Genuine W 7 installed. I need to find a generic driver for the Base System Device, and find how to turn on the updates. Thanks for your concern, all is well.

            • #1453312

I’m not sure what you mean by the Base System Device unless you are talking about the Chipset drivers ?

Win 7 has its own Windows Update trouble shooter which can be accessed by going Start – type troubleshooter then click on Find and fix problems – under System and Security click on Fix problems with Windows Update or you could run this MS fixit to reset the Update Components http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

The missing driver – is that for the wireless dongle ?

            • #1453314

About the driver missing, when I opened device manager, there was a ! on the computer, so I trouble shot it, and that’s what they said, as well as the updates are not turned on. I have used 3-4 ms fixit to no avail, but I keep trying every suggestion, stay tuned….

    • #1453316

So you will have tried http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/turn-automatic-updating-on-off#turn-automatic-updating-on-off=windows-7 and have you now got the wireless dongle working ?

You didn’t answer about the Base System Device and what was the yellow alert showing against in Device manager ?

    • #1453318

Just a thought – with doing so many clean installs, has SP1 installed yet ?

      • #1453324

#1 the wireless dongle has always worked. (I just forgot to carried it forward, ops wrong machine)
#2The yellow alert showed up, and the answer I got was Base system device missing which is a driver.
#3 The new osi 7 with SP1 was supplied by MS, and after installation of 121 updates + + +, the error code came back, after the +++. I figured it had to do with net network,so I went to restore before +++ and fixed it. So I don’t do auto updates anymore, and wait for WS has approved them, before installation.
#4 In the device manager, the yellow alert (3) showed up as other devices between Network adapters, & portable devices.

      • #1453327

At my age, I move slower than you, one finger at a time.

    • #1453328

So do you still have a problem ?

      BTW – I’m 66

    • #1453396

Okay boys, & girls listen up. My research today, hasn’t resolved my problem. Back in Aug 13, log me in with MS, 4, 3 days, & today with Omni tech, 10 hours (Spent $247 good for the year) got some good stuff, like optimize scan. Guess what? None of them could fix my problem concerning the error problem 8024402C. Any suggestions, beside trashing a computer, that they have jury rigged so as U would buy a new one, to keep them in business.

    • #1453475

If you still have the yellow alert against the Base System Device in Device Manager, then you will need to download the Chipset drivers and they can resolve a number of problems.

The article I had linked shows you how to get the PCI/VEN & DEV number for the driver which can identify what you need, but going to Dell Support will have the drivers you need.

    • #1453795

Found it fixed it, thanks UAL:o

    • #1453797

Glad you were able to get it sorted.
