• Windows Update not working

I am refurbishing a Gateway system for a local Thrift Shop for resale. I do this as a volunteer. I reformatted and reinstalled Windows ME. When I first started Windows Update, it showed about 26 updates but only installed Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 6 as they had to be installed separately. Once that was finished, I restarted the system, opened IE 6 and went to WINDOWS UPDATE – it says checking for the latest version of windows update, then a window comes up saying SCAN FOR UPDATES, I click on NEXT and then a window opens saying WINDOWS IS LOOKING FOR AVAILABLE UPDATES and it says 0% COMPLETE and never does anything more. How do I get it to identify, download and install the remaining updates? Thanks for your help.

I re-registered dsipex.dll, vbscript.dll and scrrun.dll and it seems to be working OK now. I found the solution with a Google search.

II thought Microsoft no longer supports Windows 98SE, meaning no updates whatsoever from any ot its web sites.
Even with a valid Serial Number, long ago, my W98SE stopped getting any updates from the windows update area.

      Should I try again?

No. This thread is over a year old. You won’t get anything from WU.

As Joe said you won’t get anything from MS WU but there is a goldmine of Win9x related stuff at MGDx.

not so fast. I’ve just recently setup a dual-boot XP/98se machine, booted into a clean win98se OS and have just visited the old V4 Windows Update [WU] site and have obtained a few win9x/ME updates.

so at least for me, WU does work under 98se/ME. try clearing your browsers cache, history & cookies and try the WU site again. it should “redirect” to the old V4 WU site and not the newer “V6” WU site which is for Win2k/XP.

My bad, what I meant was you won’t get any NEW stuff from WU. However, as you say, if you use a Win98 box and WUv4 you can still find all the Win 98 updates.

Any IE browser of version 5 or less will not access WU with Windows 98.

A great update for ’98SE is the “Unofficial Service Pack” for ’98.

I don’t have a link to it so you’d have to Google it. But it really helped an ailing ’98 to work better.

      Good Luck,
