    I am working on a Windows 7 Pro system Running on a lenovo desktop with intel processor which was last updated with the December patches on Jan. 8, 2018. Looking at it today, the Jan. cumulative patch KB4056894 is not installed and the feb. cumulative patch KB4074598 is not being offered by Windows update. The February version of KB890830 is being offered in Windows update. The AV software is Windows Security Essentials and it is up to date.  Any suggestions as to why Windows update isn’t offering the cumulative updates?

      Just because Microsoft Security Essentials claims it is up to date doesn’t mean that the special registry entry is properly configured or present at all. There’s a registry entry that @PKCano, @Kirsty or @MrBrian can point you to, which has to both be there and properly configured for Win Update to offer you any roll up patches starting with January’s. @PKCano or @MrBrian might be able to help you work around not being offered the updates if the registry entry is indeed there and properly configured.

      Here is the way to check if the ALLOW RegKey is properly set. If it is set and you have an AMD processor in the computer, MS could be blocking updates because of a conflict.

      If the Registry key is set, see if “2018-01 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Win7 KB4057400” is being offered unchecked in the “optional” update list. It has the fix for most AMD processors. If it is present, check it and install it. Afterward, you may be offered KB4074598 or you can wait till the March patches come out.

      The processor in the system in question is an intel processor. I will check to confirm that the registry key is set and whether or not KB4057400 is being offered as an optional update.

      I checked the machine and it has the QualityCompat setting in the registry. At the moment, Windows update is offering the following important updates:

      KB4033342, KB2952664, KB890830, and KB4011720

      It is also offering the following Optional updates:

      KB4023307,KB2952664, KB3102429 and intel driver 12.15.25.6712.

      I will install the important updates when DEFCON 3 is set. However, Windows update isn’t offering either the March cumulative update or the optional March cumulative update preview. Given the problems with the MArch cumulative update, I can understand why Windows update isn’t offering it, but I would have expected the February cumulative update to be offered since the January cumulative update wasn’t installed.

      Any suggestions or recommendations on how to debug this further?

      This sequence of actions using Windows Update was sufficient to show KB4088875 on my test virtual machine:

      1. Set the QualityCompat registry item (discussed previously).

      2. Check for updates.

      3. Install KB4074598 (2018-02 Monthly Rollup) and reboot.

      4. Check for updates.

      5. Install KB4099950.

      6. Check for updates.

      7. Hide KB4088881 (2018-03 Preview of Monthly Rollup).

      8. Check for updates.

      9. Hide KB4075211 (2018-02 Preview of Monthly Rollup).

      10. Check for updates.

      Technical info: I confirmed prior info from ch100 and abbodi86 that installation of KB4099950 is now a prerequisite for KB4088875 to be considered installable by Windows Update. I did this by using Windows Update MiniTool with “Included superseded” ticked.

        @Mr.Brian:  The following list is what I have that corresponds with your instructions:

        1.  I don’t know what Quality Compat Registry is.

        2. skip update check

        3. Install KB4074598.     ALREADY INSTALLED

        4. skip update check

        5. Install  KB 4099950.   Do not have it yet, as I have not done a “check for updates” recently.

        6. Check updates.

        7. HIDE  KB 4088881 .   I have this one on the pending updates, however HAVE NOT INSTALLED yet.

        8. skip update check

        9.  HIDE  kb4075211.   ALREADY HIDDEN.

        10.  Check for updates.

        I did install the “cure-all” that was recommended, however don’t have the KB number in front of me now.  This was a MS action which was supposed to correct some serious problems.

        With the “mess” I have, and my lack of computer expertise, it appears that I should wait for the April updates to determine if it’s “safe” to even do a “Check for updates”.  Thank you for any guidance you may be able to provide on this one, and all of the other issues you continue to provide information on.   You are “invaluable”, and very much appreciated by everyone!    🙂

          In your case, since you already installed KB4074598 successfully, don’t worry about the QualityCompat registry item. You’ll need to do an update check before doing step 5 though.

          P.S. It should always be safe to check for updates in Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 :).

            @Mr.Brian:   Thank you so much for the guidance.    Thank you also for pointing out that I must do a “Check for updates” prior to step 5.

            It is good to know that it is “safe” to do the “Check for Updates”.    I hope I will come out unscathed.   I must learn how to do a safe “backup” first before I attempt anything at this point in time.  I have never had the time to try that, and don’t know the difference between doing a “back-up”, and “setting a restore point”.

            Yes, I know it’s almost “hopeless” in my case, and I do appreciate your understanding.  Thank you once again, my friend.    🙂

          @Mr.Brian:   I was in the middle of trying to work with the list you had prepared, when the Defcon 2 dropped like a bomb.   Went through what I had, however overlooked hiding KB4088881.  Installed the KB4099950 without any problem, however after it was finished installing, it did NOT do a restart.  There were only options for updating, so I closed it out, and then did a “restart”.  At that time I did the “Check for updates”.   I hid the KB4088881 which was unchecked in the “Optionals”.  Other than that I have done nothing else and don’t know about those that are still there, so hope you will be able to provide the guidance which I need.

          I have not been able to keep up with the ton of emails….  I only have questions about the following which I hope you can clarify for me.  After I did the “update check” this is what I now have:

          IMPORTANT:

          KB4088875, Sec. Quality Monthly Rollup Win7 x64.  UNCHECKED.  236.7 MB

          KB 4091290, UNCHECKED.  234.9MB  update for WINx64

          KB4033342, NET Framework.  CHECKED I think that PKCano noted that this can be ignored.   74.4 MB .   It is old, from January, and I think that he/she indicated that it was all right to ignore it.

          Windows Defender & MSRT, both CHECKED.    The WD, has an old update on it (I think because I knew there had been a problem with one of the updates and I don’t know if it’s safe now or not, although it shows a current date of 4-5-18).  The update shows version 1.265.111.0 as of now.

          THE OPTIONALS:   All okay as of now (as I hid the one I overlooked the first time).

          This is all that I now have as a result of the updating.  Any guidance with the status of these updates would be a tremendous help.  I just could not keep up with the overwhelming amount of emails, trying to sift “preferences” from the “facts” if there are problems.  Thank you so very, very much for all of the help you have provided with these problems.   You are outstanding in every respect, from your amazing abilities, knowledge, and the willingness to help us all.    I, and so many others are very, very grateful for your expertise and help.   🙂

            I recommend to install those updates that you listed that are ticked by default. Whether you want to also install KB4088875 is your call. I installed KB4088875 a few weeks ago and have had no apparent issues, but there are no guarantees that you’ll have the same experience.

              Thank you for your opinion about the “mess”.  It appears that perhaps Group W, may be the best since there are apparently not enough facts about the patches that users have the confidence they need to know if it is “safe” or “not safe”, so that being said, says it all.  Just to clarify the issue that I mentioned about not getting a “restart” after successfully installing the KB4099950, this was not the “normal” screen that you get when you “select check for updates”.   That is the reason I opted to do my own “restart”.  I had not encountered such a situation previously.

              It is a gamble for the users if they wish to travel that route.   It may be acceptable to those who are not the “average” users, and it only becomes worse and in the end there “are NO winners”.  Those seem to be the facts, unfortunately. Thank you for your assessment of an untenable situation.  Your opinion is always highly regarded and we are all grateful for your views and leadership.    🙂

        I’ve seen several reports from users that did the steps in post #182019, but yet still don’t see KB4074598. Here is an alternate sequence of actions:

        1. Set the QualityCompat registry item (discussed previously).

        2. Check for updates.

        3. Install KB4099950.

        4. Hide all updates listed, except for KB4074598.

        5. Check for updates.

        6. See if KB4074598 is present. If not, go to step 4.

          @mrbrian I have manually installed KN4099950 on the target machine in this thread. Windows update still isn’t offering a monthly roll-up, although it offers the MSRT and I have successfully installed that each month. Should I manually install a monthly roll-up. If so, which one? The last monthly roll-up to install with Windows update was December 2017.

      Not sure if KB4074598 (2018-02 Monthly Rollup) is a requirement for the March 2018 update, but it cannot harm. In theory the 2018-03 Monthly Rollup should supersede the 2018-02 Monthly Rollup, but as everything seems to be done in a haste this month due to the “Total Meltdown” issue, having a reliable and proven method like the one documented by you is the best course of action to follow.
      As I said in a previous post, waiting for the 2018-04 Monthly Rollup and installing during either the first weekend after release or when Susan Bradley or Woody give green light, choosing either method according to each users’ degree of tolerable risk, may be even better to avoid all the hotfixes which were released mid-cycle out-of-band during the last few weeks.

        The supersedenceBehavior=1 attribute of KB4074598 that I noted in this post seems to be causing KB4074598 to not be listed in Windows Update in expected scenarios.

      @mrbrian, I don’t get to the machine in question very often. Checking today (07May2018), it is still not advertising the monthly rollup.  Reviewing our research, I believe I should download KB4099950 manually, install it, restart and then check for updates. Hopefully, windows update will offer the rollup and life will be back to normal. If a monthly is not offered by WIndows update, should I download and install the February rollup as indicated previously in this thread?

      Working on this issue,  I installed KB4099950. WU still did no offer a monthly rollup. I manually installed the February rollup KB4074598. After this installed successfully WU offered me KB4100480, which I installed. After rebooting WU didn’t offer me any further updates. I manually installed the 2018-06 monthly rollup, KB4284826. I am going to check today to see if 2018-08 roll-up is being offered. WU is also not offering the .NET rollups. Currently KB4055532, KB409963 and KB4345590 have not been offered. Whould I manually install these? Also what is the technique for manually installed a .NET rollup? The update catalog shows them as having 4 or 5 pieces.
