Short answer: It’s Microsoft’s fault. They let the ExpiryDate pass without updating it. You can tweak your machine (e.g., set the date back) but for n

Usually, I do the updates on the first Monday of the month.

And yep, the same thing happened to me today.

This is kind of hard to believe.

I retired from IT software consulting a couple of years ago.

If I had ever pulled a stunt like this it would have been the end of my career.

Personally, this is the end of Microsoft Windows for me.

Last year, I wasted a lot of time avoiding the Windows 10 update on my Window 7 machine.

This year, it’s been an ongoing battle to keep useless compatiblity telemetry off my machine.

The next operating system I use will definitely NOT be anything from that outfit.

Whether that will be an improvement remains to be seen.

glad the site is back to normal. shows how important it has become. side note, in the days BW (before stumbling upon askwoody) while looking for a fix to the endless update scans, i drilled down to the Software Distribution>WuRedir folder as the cause of high cpu conpsumption and long scan times. one of the two 7.6.7000.320 Windows Update Agent CLSIDS was where all the noise was coming from. in days before woody i had to look at all the files in each update to keep winx and telemetry from installing. many thanks, again

      sheesh, I finally got in!!

I found a temporary fix for the windows update issue.
I found it on the following site.

      http://borncity.com/win/2017/12/04/windows7-error-0x80248015-in-update-search-dec-4-2017/

you have to go to update settings and uncheck give me updates for Microsoft products.

I did and my checking for updates worked without a problem and was able to install today’s MSE definitions.

apparently the fix comes from someone in Germany.

But we should mention, that after unchecking the option, this option is gone. I’ve posted a note and linked also a blog post how to fix that 2nd issue – but till know, the blog post is only in German.

AHHHHH, I thought it was just me!

I spent all last ****ing night trying to get Microsoft Update (not Windows Update, that worked by nuking the cache) working on my new install.

I come to it today and two of my other machines have “Can’t connect, the service is not running” or whatever.

      Probably due to this then.

Another attempt to force everyone onto Windows 10? They’ve made so many b****-*** and mishaps and downright BS (blocking updates for new processors) and so on with Win 7, it can’t be JUST incompetence or lack of care.

    • #149634

Yep. Yesterday the 3rd, I updated Win7 on three machines – no problem. Today they throw the 80248015 error. Changed the date back to 12/1/2017 and – viola – Windows Update works again.

I’m mostly a ‘forgiving’ fellow: If an otherwise accurate, productive, on-top-of-it employee or supplier made the rare or occassional slip-up, I’d give the benefit of the doubt. Everyone makes mistakes once in a while.

But when the pattern is a repeated, continual, chronic series of screw-ups…. well, that’s incompetence. Time to fire the employee; time to change suppliers.

    • #149630

      yep, you’re right. absolutely

      m$ got nuts completely!

moreover, I can clarify that checking updates for windows only is ok but if your WUC set for checking updates for windows & all other m$ products by default then you are in trouble. WUC just crashes with DCOM error in log:

The server {9B1F122C-2982-4E91-AA8B-E071D54F2A4D} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

here the error is always 0x80248015 (WU_E_DS_SERVICEEXPIRED) on all win7  machines around.

both ping & trace of update.microsoft.com always failed.

in other words the first below option is alive

      http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx?ln=en-US

      but this one is dead

      http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx?ln=en-US

      temporarily I hope.

Woody, you have lots of connections. Is there anybody at home at Microsoft who knows and/or gives a d*** about this mess? No, I do not mean just this particular instance, but the whole Windows Update mess.

This is really p…..g a lot of people off. I mean hundreds of millions of people. Far more than the most expensive, extensive advertising campaign could ever reach. This is corporate suicide.

It’s like delivering a defective product and then closing the customer service department because it is getting too expensive.

My problem with this ongoing update fiasco is most of the fixes involve waiting on MS to do something or tweaking something the average user should be touching. The first is risky as the problem persists until MS deigns to fix it. The second requires skills most user do not (and should not need to) have. We are not talking about doing the update then rebooting.

      • #149742

        Microsoft rarely listens to me.

Fortunately, Mary Jo Foley picked up on the problem – and MS frequently responds to her.

        I have hope….

      This worked for me.

Change ‘WU Settings’ to ‘Never Check For Updates’
Remove all the ‘X’s’ from the boxes below. ‘OK’

Check for updates ¦ Working, again.

Change all the previous settings, back to your customization. ‘OK’.

Check for updates ¦ Still working.

Give it a go: nothing to lose .

Is this what is going to happen come 2020, where you can’t update at ALL?

I thought you’d still be able to download old / existing ones fine, and they just wouldn’t add new ones…

OscarCP here, being logged in as Anonymous, I’d expect, because my login still does not seem to register, although I once more got the double-barred “You re already logged in” message when I tried to do that.

Today I have noticed a different problem with Windows Update: when I click on it at the Control Panel, I get the little hourglass that means “busy”. The hourglass is still going several minutes later, getting in the way of everything on the GUI except for the Task Bar. I click on it, get Task Manager running, kill the Control Panel application, things go back to normal. Fortunately, I still can find and download the updates from the MS Catalog, to install them manually. I know because I tried it, just in case this problem has not gone away by or after next Patch Tuesday.

I have also stopped Wuauserv from running from the control line. Then, when I clicked on Windows Update I got the usual Update window but showing an angry red shield and the notice that updating has been switched off (which already I knew, of course) and that I must do a restart to get it going again.

One more thing: Nowhere there is the “Check for other MS software” link people are talking about. At least not anywhere I can find in my Windows 7 Pro, SP1 x 64 PC. But, then again, I am not getting the error message that others are also talking about. My symptoms, as described above, are different

    • #149700

I can’t even get Windows Update to load now.  The window is blank and the cursor just spins.

Thankfully I installed the November updates on December 2nd.

I said “thankfully” because I installed the November rollup, rebooted, installed November MRT, and rebooted again. I didn’t have any problems installing/checking for updates until after this board lit up like a Christmas tree with reports of Windows Update not working.

          • #149727

            Same annon.

Oh, that is how I read you. And I’m a big fan of mindful thankfulness. But I continue to wonder if I had continued to wait despite the level 3 rating, would it be broken at all?

One leading to the other. Just now noticed my duplicate message that I’d thought lost to a 504 timeout. Sorry for the stammer.

    • #149709

sooo what update is causing windows 7 update to not scan or install updates or whats going on with it again? Simplify the siutation for me please?

    • #149717

This seems to also affect MS Security Essentials updating.  I get the same error code when trying to update definitions from within MSSE.

      • #149808

My system Win7Pro-64 SP1 which had been fully patched Group B style on 11/30/2017 has received MSE updates daily since then.  When I ran WU tonight after reading the article, I got the red shield.  I then tried a manual MSE update, and the MSE updated.

I then went to WU settings (set on Never check, and give recommended UNticked, and MS Updates and detailed explanation TICKED).  I UNticked the detailed info and re-checked for updates and it was back to normal.  I then re-ticked the detailed info box.  I did not alter the original MS Updates tickmark.

Maybe the ticking or unticking of detailed explanation fixed it, or more likely it was the MSE update that reset things.

I did check the AUTHCAB.CAB file and the internal XML date was the 2025 date.  The date of the Authcab file was 12/5/2017 1:09AM, so that is when the MSE updated.

    • #149737

If WU is broken, it stands to reason that any fix will not be through WU. I don’t know what affect setting the date back to 12/02/17 will have on updating and your system, if any, and I don’t want to lose the option to receive updates for other windows products either. If Microsoft does post a fix in the update catalog I hope someone will post a link here when and if that happens. Cheers 🙂

deleting the softwaredistribution folder and letting WU rebuild it worked for me

This procedure disables Microsoft Update and leaves only Windows Update in place. Similar to Gunther Born’s solution.
MrBrian has updated news which I still have to confirm.
I was wondering if this was intended as discontinuation for ActiveX support for Microsoft Update with a view to replace it with a different technology.

This is one of several reasons why I have been using the Simplix update pack for nearly the past year. I know a lot of people are probably suspicious about the fact that it was created by someone in Russia but I and many, many others have never found anything suspicious included in it.

And, one of the best things is – you can keep a clean install of Windows 7 offline until you run the latest Simplix pack which means you’re up to date with security patches from the moment you go online. It even includes Internet Explorer 11 (it isn’t installed by default if you don’t already have it, you need to include it from a Command Prompt).

And, it also doesn’t include any of the telemetry patches or the 7th generation processor blocking update from last April (which is why I’m running W7 on Kaby Lake with all the Windows updates apart from the aforementioned ones). I  sometimes check Windows Update after installing the Simplix pack and usually there’s nothing there apart from things like the infamous KB2952664 and Co. which get hidden again, of course.

    • #149756

Microsoft may have fixed the problem. I just checked for updates for Windows 7 (with “Give me updates for Microsoft products […]” remaining ticked), and it worked fine. My authorization.xml file was updated and now includes these two lines:

      <IssuedDate>2017-12-01T00:00:00.0000000-00:00</IssuedDate>
      <ExpiryDate>2025-07-01T00:00:00.0000000-00:00</ExpiryDate>

P.S. I didn’t do any of the fixes in this topic.

      • #149763

It’s in file authorization.xml, which is contained within the authcab.cab file mentioned in Woody’s article. You may need a program such as 7-Zip to look at the files inside of authcab.cab.

You don’t need to change this file manually. It updated by itself when I checked for updates.

      Thanks Woody.

Your fix worked on my Win7 Pro X64. Just as you stated Copy & Paste into the old command prompt window. Where would we be without the old timer DOS. Your fix worked like a charm. The Windows Update on this one is now working as normal. It showed one Optional update, “2017-11 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64 based Systems (KB4051034)”. I didn’t install it. Remembered it from days ago before the c*** started.

Thanks again for your fix…………..NC Boling

    • #149758

Well, all of a sudden WU is working again with not changes on my part.  Still not sure what the cause was…

PS: Oops… I forgot to tell folks here that unchecked “give me updates for Microsoft products” and subsequently had that option box disappear, I found that uninstalling and re-installing MSSE gets that option back. Seems to be the easier fix I could find as I think that is the only other MS product I use other than Windows 7.

    • #149766

Win7 Pro x64. My Windows Update is set to “Never” and only run it after Defcon 3 and after first installing the Group B Security Only patches. Then I hide the Rollups and install the Office 2010 updates I’m offered, MSRT, etc . Did all that on 11/30/2017.

Question. Next Defcon 3, will I be able to turn on Windows Update and not run into problems…, assuming MS fixes this on their end??? Or from 11/30/2017, do I have some sort of corrupt local file which will require all kinds of fixes and workarounds on my end 3 – 4 weeks from now?! THAT would tick me off as would losing my complete “update history” which is currently intact. 🙁

Hope heads are rolling in Redmond as I type…

    • #149782

Four Win 7 systems here back to updating normally using Microsoft Update.  I find the new <ExpiryDate> of 07-01-2025 VERY interesting.

For the few fossils here that have the need to use Windpws XP sometimes Microsoft Update is (still) dorked as well.  Rolling back to Windows Update does get updating working in XP that way but MSSE can’t get definition updates through WU so your SOL with MSSE for the time being.

Dang and MS had ust got XP updating speed fixed too!!!

anonymous #149436 from the other thread here.

After seeing MrBrian’s post #149756 above, and retrying for myself, I can also confirm that Microsoft allows systems that have already executed a version of Canadian Tech’s reset to join the party as well. I did observe a wrinkle.

I needed to rehide yet again my short list of unwanted updates, just like I had done with the reset fix. I believe their solution may have been very similar. Also, my setting has been reverted back to ‘You receive updates: For Windows and other products from Microsoft Update’. Now how would they know to do that, when my local setting had already been changed by the local application of the reset? To my mind, either they are doing it for everyone, or they are maintaining a copy of my settings, and presumably everyone’s, on their end as well.

Well nothing lost but hours of time, and another batch of respect for Microsoft. Amazed that I find there is some still left. Maybe that is the silver lining for the season.

Sometime in the last hour my Windows Update is back to working as normal. Win7 pro sp1 x64.

Upon opening Windows Update, I was getting a blank window which was totally unresponsive and could only be closed using the Task Manager, after which I would get a message saying IE 11 had stopped functioning. I walked away from the computer, did something for an hour, and when I came back, I had a balloon saying I had new updates in Windows Update. I opened WU and everything seemed identical to what it was yesterday afternoon before it stopped working. The only thing not present was the 2 definition updates for MS Security Essentials that I had done manually while WU wasn’t working. Other than that, it was showing the same hidden updates, update history, etc. So you apparently don’t need to do anything for it to start working
      correctly.

By the way, I did NOT try any of the fixes mentioned above; WU just started working again of it’s own accord.

DrBonzo, were you set to never check for updates? Or is it normal for you to come to your computer and have Win7 telling you that there are updates available?

What I mean is are your settings the same as they were before?

        • #149851

Before it stopped working I had it set for ‘Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them’. This setting is still in effect after it has started working again.

So, yes, the settings are the same as they were before. Or, in other words, it is normal for me to have a notification that there are updates available from Windows Update. (I’m a Group B person so I don’t install Security and Quality Rollups for Win 7 that WU tells me are available. But, I do like to see what WU THINKS I should be installing.)

I had done the workaround (unchecked check for other microsoft products) yesterday.
This morning when I read that it was fixed, I tried to do an update and it didn’t work at first.
Then I tried a second time and it worked. I also updated my MSE definitions.

I’m thinking maybe unchecking that option, and now it disappeared, was not a good thing.
I remember there is a way to get that option back.
How do I get that option back or do I even need it?
I don’t have office, silverlight etc.

    • #149880

For those of you who couldn’t wait for MS to fix the WU error, who wiped the datastore and lost the link for Mictosoft Update “Update for other MS products” (as opposed to Windows Update, which doesn’t include other products):

HOW TO GET “Updates for other MS Products” BACK

      Through MS Office
      Office 200?
1-Close all running Microsoft Office components.
      2-Open Regedit
      3-Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\General
4-Modify the “ShownOptIn” value from 1 to 0
5-Launch a Microsoft Office component, it will give you the option to download the updates, make sure you select it.
6-Done. If you go back to “Windows Update”, then “Change Settings”, you will see the “Microsoft Update” and “Software notifications” sections are available again (until the Microsoft Update check box is unchecked again).
CAUTION: Read the check box. This may reset Windows Update to Automatic. HIDE anything in WU you don’t want to install until you can reset the choice to “Let me choose” or “Never”

      Office 2010
      1-Open Regedit
      2-Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\General
Change : “ShownFirstRunOptin” to 0.   This seems to tell Microsoft that I have not already been show the welcome screen offering updates when I start office.
3-Launch a Microsoft Office component, it will give you the option to download the updates, make sure you select it.  I checked – install updates only
4-Done.

      Through PowerShell
      Powershell
      $ServiceManager = New-Object -ComObject “Microsoft.Update.ServiceManager”
      $ServiceManager.ClientApplicationID = “My App”
      $ServiceManager.AddService2(“7971f918-a847-4430-9279-4a52d1efe18d”,7,””)

      Through a vb script
      ServiceManager = CreateObject(“Microsoft.Update.ServiceManager”)
      ServiceManager.ClientApplicationID = “My App”
      Set NewUpdateService = ServiceManager.AddService2(“7971f918-a847-4430-9279-4a52d1efe18d”,7,””)

      To create the script file:
      Open Notepad.
      Copy/paste the above to Notepad
“Save file as” Script.vbs to your Desktop (be sure there is not .txt on the end of the file name.
Open an elevated Command prompt (cmd.exe run as Admin)
Type in “cscript C:\Users\UserID\Desktop\script.vbs” hit enter
You will need to enter your correct UserID. If your UserID has a space in it, you will need to put the quotes around “C:\….\script.vbs” (do not include cscript in the quotes), otherwise if there is no space in your ID you do not need the quotes at all.

      Through Silverlight
Another method suggests you install Silverlight (provided you want Silverlight on your PC). I have not used this one before.

You are probably going to get an options box at the end of the Silverlight install to “install updates for other MS products” similar to the one for the Office products. I am going to give the same caution I did for that method:
CAUTION: Read the check box. This may reset Windows Update to Automatic. HIDE anything in WU you don’t want to install until you can reset the choice to “Let me choose” or “Never”

And then you will need to uninstall Silverlight if you don’t want it.

      EDIT to add another method

thank you for that reset optional updates (other products) time saver PKCano! during the slow scan high cpu era i used to rip out software distribution on a regular basis and had to keep re-learning the office procedure. i currently can’t find the search box to see if there is a akb shortcut listing for “Rebuild Microsoft Update” process.

        • #149896

          You are welcome.

There is a link now on the right that says “Search this site.” Use that.

      • #150387

You are probably going to get an options box at the end of the Silverlight install to “install updates for other MS products” similar to the one for the Office products.

After installing Silverlight, the option to “Enable” updates is unchecked by default. Tick to enable, on the final screen of the install process. It’s very quick.

      • #150570

Looks like a good candidate for an AKB!

Also…. how hard to put together something about resetting the Distribution folder?

      • #151613

Doesn’t that (getting MS update re-enabled via office) also opt you in the customer experience improvement program (i.e. please track me for marketing purposes)?

Can I do your first option to restore the microsoft update options (I do not have office) but instead change the antimalware value from 1 to 0 in the registry?

      • #149907

I don’t know if changing the anti-malware value from 1 to 0 works. But if it doesn’t you can just change it back to 1.

The others work. I used the  script file. I have used the Office one in the past (observe the Caution).

ALWAYS BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU EDIT THE REGISTRY

On my machines with W7 and W8.1 doesn’t work Office 2010 update. It behaves like Office doesn’t exists at all even if I have checked “Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows”,

      What to do?

    • #149933

After finally getting the latest updates today after the last two days of inability on my wife’s Dell laptop, Windows 7 x 64bit, I searched for any new updates one more time and it came back with one important update…KB3177467. What is this and is it necessary if her laptop is working just fine? It has never appeared before and is not listed in previous installed updates list. It is dated OCT. 2016. I had unchecked “Give me updates for Microsoft products etc…” and then lost that option, so uninstalled MSE…reinstalled and updated it and got the button back…then this new update appears…? James T.

      • #149943

That is the servicing stack for Win7.
It doesn’t show up until there are no other checked updates in the important list.
Yes, you need to install it.
        Here is the information

Thank you Mr. Cano…I had done some searching on this subject, however after running into some threads about individuals having issues after installing this patch I became a bit hesitant and needed some reassurance. I also updated my Dell OPTIPLEX Windows 7 x 64 at the same time on the desktop and it did not appear thus leaving me in a bit of confusion. I appreciate your prompt response and also your constant willingness to help all of us with our own peculiar needs in regard to Microsoft and Windows these days. The install went fast and without consequent, by the way.

I was able to get WU working again but the icon is still missing from the taskbar. I’m running Win7Home PremSP1 and have installed the Nov. update.

Anybody with similar results? Any ideas how to get icon back on taskbar?

      Thanks

      Win 10 Pro v.20h2

      • #150115

(If you are the anon in “Win7 Update now appears to be working” thread, I replied to your post there #150107. But here it is again….) <It makes it hard not receiving replies via email>

If you have chosen the setting “Never check for updates (not recommended)” the icon will not appear in the taskbar / notification centre.

Choosing any of the other three options in Change settings (why would you want to? 😉 ) will bring the icon back but that’s only if there are any updates available for your computer of course.

I was able to reset the “update for other MS products” however I didn’t use any of the solutions given recently.
I was able to reset without going into the registry and changing it, or deleting the software distribution folder etc…..
I somehow came across this solution by someone who posted it here.  I’m sorry I didn’t jot down the name of the poster.
This worked and it was simple.  Here was the original post:

“Firstly, make sure the link opens in Internet Explorer – might be easiest to make it your default browser just for this operation.

Then it should ask if you want to install the Microsoft Update activex control or something similar, cant recall the exact message.

This should take you to the page, in IE, which lets you subscribe to microsoft update once again.

You may need to add the *.microsoft.com domain to the ‘Compatibility View’ options in IE – no idea why but for some reason their own page needs that to render properly.

      BEAUTIFUL … IT WORKED !

one Additional point…My default IE settings has Active X filtering ON [4th item in drop-down list under Tools]… so I turned that off after making IE my default browser, added Microsoft.com to compatibility settings and then , holding my breath, let the VISTA active X run [if you hadn’t suggested this route and I hadn’t seen your previous notes, I wouldn’t have let a Vista-active-x run]”

To be clearer I (dgreen) did these steps:
1st thing I did was make IE11 my default browser.
2nd added .microsoft.com to Compatibility View (very important!)
3rd Turn off Active X filtering (IE settings under Tools)

It then gave me the option of let the Vista active X run
      which I did.
Now it gave me the page, in IE, which lets you subscribe to microsoft update once again.
      which I did….
I then checked my update settings and all the options were back.
I set settings to “never check”
      then did a manual check.
      It worked!

Whoever posted this reset solution, if I remember correctly, said it was a solution they found from a long time ago.

To be honest I wasn’t sure about the Vista activeX run step (seeing I have Windows 7) but I figured give it a shot!
      It worked.  Who knew!

You don’t mention “what link” you refer to.
Is it the one in post #150038 by anonymous poster -T?

I believe what the poster meant was make sure you are using your Internet Explorer browser when you do the reset.  My default browser is Chrome so I had to reset IE as my default browser for the reset.  When I was done I reset to have Chrome as my default browser.
I don’t believe it was that poster, because I quoted what they posted which started with “Firstly” and it’s not in your post link above.
My comment on what I did is after the bolded words.

      • #150167

Can you post the link referred to here?

ie, what link is supposed to open in IE?

        • #150292

          PKCano  There is no link.
In order to reset the microsoft product option you have to be using IE 11 with the above changes (# 1, 2, 3).
Once I did that I then went to my windows update on my computer, (by clicking start and in search box typed in windows update)
when the page opened, I clicked on the link that said other microsoft products (or whatever it said just beneath where it says windows only update).
IE then opened up the page for vista active x option which I allowed IE to install it,
then I got the page that let me subscribe to microsoft updates.
which I did, then checked my computer’s windows update and saw that all the options were back.  I then changed the setting to “never” and did a windows update check and it ran perfectly.

Usually when I copy/paste a solution I usually include the poster who posted it.  Somehow, I did not this time.  I think I remember that the post was an older one, maybe from 2016.

My Windows update is fixed (Win7 Pro 64-bit).  Here is what I did:

      1) Replaced authcab.cab as desribed in post https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/windows-update-for-win7-broken-throwing-error-80248015/#post-149842

      2) Restarted computer.

      3) Ran Windows Update.  Got the red shield warning and then “Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running>’

      4) Found solution for that problem at  https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-update-cannot-currently-check-for-updates/b250e431-cdfc-46ac-a044-eaaee17491cf?auth=1.  Here are the steps:

      Click Start
      Type: cmd
Right click on cmd in start menu and select ‘Run as Administrator’
      Type: net stop wuauserv
      Hit Enter
      Type: ren c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old
      Hit Enter
      Type: net start wuauserv
      Hit Enter
      Type: exit
      Hit Enter

Then I ran Windows Update, and it found several updates to download and install.   Now authcab.cab has the new IssuedDate and ExpiryDate.  Maybe all I needed was step 4, stopping the service and renaming the folder and starting the service.

I agree with everyone who thinks MS made a hugely annoying mistake with this debacle.

Last comment in this thread is 7.12.

on 10.12. i tried to install multiple win 7 machines and all of them fails to update with error 80072EE2
even manually downloading the http://download.windowsupdate.com/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/7.6.7600.320/windowsupdateagent-7.6-x64.exe   does not work
so it seems that microsoft servers are somehow not working

So for typical users who don’t pay attention this will just break windows updates unless they (or someone) fixes it for them?
