Ever since the updates and servicing stacks have been combined, I have been unable to install them using windows update. The servicing stack will install but the update fails.

As an alternative I download the update and servicing stack from MS update catalog. After the the standalone updater finally finishes the install, I delete the uninstalled update that remains in the settings file and remove the  files from the windows update software distribution file on the “C” drive.

I have used all the trouble shooters to try and repair the update as well as all the other methods  I found in various searches. One of the tools I found was the MS Install and uninstall trouble shooter. It included a 2019 update that is not installed on my computer that I purchased in 2o21; kb4880730.  It was never offered to me as an update. Could that be the problem?  ( The only other  uninstalled update is Kb4023057 and that was because of what I read about it in this forum.)

My Os is Win 10 Pro 22H2(19045.5608). Any suggestions?

    Peace, CAS

Does WU produce an error code for failed updates (that look like this: 0X8024402F)? If so, which one(s)?  Search the error code online and/or see https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/installing-updates-features-roles/common-windows-update-errors

Have you tried emptying the Delivery Optimization Cache?  See: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/delivery-optimization-in-windows-dbcaf188-0cf9-427a-b791-a7c5d740a48c

You can start by SFC /scannow to fix corrupted files
      Followed by DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Running repair-install may fix Windows update problems.

Thank you both for your help. Before posting this thread I had already done what you both suggested, except for a repair-install.

I’ll wait until there’s another update to download and see if my efforts bear fruit. Until then, I will keep this thread open. Hopefully, at that time win update will work as it should. I’ll post here so you know.

P>S>I noticed that kb4480370 has been installed. It showed up in the list of installed programs in Revo Installer.

      What is kb4480370 ?

    • #2755774

Windows Updates and Servicing Stack Updates were combined in Feb 2021; oooh, 4 years is a long time without a fully functioning Windows Update service.

Given that those 4 years have also included 2 feature updates (21H2 and 22H2) among many other things, I can’t help thinking that a fresh install (or, at least, a repair install) would do your device the power of good – if you’re feeling brave enough.

Failing that, I can only repeat my usual advice of ensuring Fast Start-Up is switched OFF, then Shut Down (i.e. not Sleep or Hibernate) your device at the end of every day; Start Up in the morning and leave it for 15 mins.  Continue to run the WU Troubleshooter from time to time, too.  Many a WU problem has been flushed out that way!

        I didn’t say anything about Win10 22H2.
Just answered your question with the link to information on the KB.

A few months ago I had a 10-22H2 system that hit a wall with updates. I tried all the usual troubleshooting along with manual download and install, which always failed with error codes for which I could find no solution in reputable forums or online resources. I ended up doing a bare-metal install and restoring files and settings from backup.

This appears to be a common problem. Somebody at MS probably knows why it occurs and likely how to fix it but does not share that info with its users.

I was unaware of the Reset Windows Update Tool that was covered in this post from Deanna McElveen:

      https://www.askwoody.com/2024/reset-windows-update-tool-but-you-might-never-use-it-for-that/

If my system does another update faceplant I’ll try that tool.

It’s good to know that I’m not alone. I’ll post here if the fixes that I undertook allow me to download directly from win update.

The “over-the-top” install left my system exactly as dysfunctional as it was before. Perhaps it will work for you. On my system, which had never showed any other kind of instability, a bare-metal install fixed at.

As before, I find it difficult to believe that MS doesn’t know how to fix these errors. Sure would be nice it they would share an effective repair procedure with their customers.

The fact that they haven’t suggests there is no easy fix.

After yesterday’s effort I learned that my antivirus was disrupting the installation of the cumulative update. Interestingly, it did not disrupt the loading or installation of .Net update. Live and learn.

In that case perhaps MS could just be honest, instead of offering an “update troubleshooter” that sees no evil, hears no evil, and unmonitored forums offering useless suggestions from the ill informed sending supplicants down multiple rabbit holes. After all that we end up doing a rip and replace anyway.

my antivirus was disrupting the installation

I always disable my A/V before installing updates as the A/V slows down downloading and installation (checking each file for malware) and hikes CPU usage.

I use MS Defender and never have issues with updates – or viruses.

        cheers, Paul
