Why if execute the shortcut for Terminal (“C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.WindowsTerminal_1.12.10983.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\WindowsTerminal.exe”) do I end up in Powershell?  Does it matter?  Because a PowerShell window has a few more options

    Does it matter?

Yea, but still, why if I load Terminal do I end up in PowerShell?

Because MS have decided it is so.
If you want the old Command Prompt, Win R cmd Enter.

If you want the command prompt tab to open when you start Terminal (and not Powershell) make this change in the Terminal settings:

open settings in Terminal.  In Terminal, the shortcut to settings is Cntl + , (control and comma keys together)

change the setting in Startup “Default profile” to “Command Prompt”.

if necessary, change the setting in Startup “When Terminal starts” to “Open a tab with the default profile”.

        choose Save.

When you reopen Terminal, it should open Command Prompt as default.  You can get additional tabs (perhaps you will want Powershell) using the little down arrow on the top bar.

While Terminal defaults to PowerShell, it can be whatever you want it to be, as explained by @TryLinux above. I defaulted mine to cmd as I’m more old school, but you can even default it to a WSL terminal if you want!

      Or Use the dropdown menu…
      Terminal-Options
