Three times in the past 6 weeks when I started my computer, the system halts at the windows xp startup screen, the one right before the color bars under the xp logo. it gives the message that “windowssystem32configsystem” is missing or corrupt and that i should use the repair utility within the xp setup disk. what/how exactly do I repair that file in the repair console? The thing that’s mind boggling is that when I shutdown the night before my machine was running perfectly well. Like I said this has happened to me 3 times in the past 6 weeks and I was just wondering if anybody else on here was having this problem? I also bought the “Full Version” of XP Home instead of upgrading from Windows 98 so I wouldn’t have problem…..ha, ha, silly me, huh?

Anyway, there is a site called Tek-Tips that a lot of others have had this problem if any of you want to check this out at::http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread.cfm/lev2/67/lev3/70/pid/779/qid/101860s

I was hoping that maybe some of you could help me out so this problem wouldn’t resurface because it’s very alarming when it does because I’m afraid of losing all my data!!!

Thanks in advance for any help. To get the thing going I had to pay Microsoft $35 on their toll line to get me up and running again! As it turns out the guy who sold me my version of XP sold me an OEM version which Microsoft won’t give any assistance to without charging….nice, huh?

    Regards,
    JeffT.

The file that was reported corrupt is a part of your computer’s Registry. Probably you have bad clusters on your hard drive. Try to repair it – Start | Run, type:
      chkdsk /f
and restart your computer. To eliminate this problem, consider to convert your drive to NTFS.

Thank you for your input and for taking the time to try and help me figure this out. It doesn’t do it frequently, but when it does you only get to the screen with the XP Home logo on it. Then the next thing you see is this error message: “Windows/System32/ config/system” from here you have to reset the BIOS to boot from the A drive or CD then I go to the repair console and attempt to repair the corrupt Hive or files. I’d really like to know what is causing the corruption in these files!

Thanks again for your help and if you have *any idea* what could be causing them to get corrupted PLEASE let me know.

        Regards,
        Jeff
