Windows Search Front-end?

I use both Windows 7 (at work) and Mac OSX (at home). On the Mac I have a great program called Houdahspot which is a front-end for the OSX search index. Does anyone know of a similar program for Windows? Programs like Copernic and Google desktop generate their own indices rather than just front-end the already existing Windows index. The native Windows search syntax is arcane and I would like something that makes it easier to build more complex searches. Any suggestions?

Agent Ransack doesn’t use an index at all but is very quick. It can search for filenames or contents of files and it has an option for Regular Expressions. It’s freeware (with a related payware product which has more features). I’ve used it on Windows XP and Windows 7 and can highly recommend it. (I’ve no connection with the company other than as a satisfied user.)
