I am new to Windows Phone 8 — just got a Nokia 820 on an AT&T Upgrade and am learning, learning, learning all of the quirks, ways of doing things that are foreign to Windows users, and MS Office users. Outlook for Windows Phone is such the case as it is NOTHING like the Outlook in Windows Desktop OS. One can’t even configure a POP account in Outlook Mobile: you’re limited to Outlook-Exchange, Outlook.com accounts and Office 365. I don’t even know what e-mail client they do use, but it seems no other e-mail apps are available or offered in the Windows Store or otherwise.
My main problem with this lame client is I cannot receive .DOC, .DOCX or .TXT attachments — they just don’t show. I can, however, attach a .PDF file and it shows. Anyone found this to be their experience? Any solutions or ideas? Know of any other e-mail clients for POP accounts?

When I was looking at the Windows Phone 7, I was terribly upset over the e-mail setup, in that I was told and read so many times that it just wouldn’t sync up with Outlook, and that was near a deal breaker for me. That was, until I actually had one (Windows 7.5) in my hands, and tried to set up my POP 3 accounts. If I remember correctly, you can go into “Advanced Setup” and set it up from there. It was easy to do.
As for attachemtns, I have no problem receiving attachments what so ever. I have received both .doc and .docx.
The Windows Phone 8, like any other phone out there, has its drawbacks, and does and doesnt do things that others do or dont do. Over all though it is one helluva phone.
My advice to you is two fold:

1: Slow Down, take a deep breath, and although it (the manual) leaves something to be desired re read the manual.
2: Take it to the store that you bought it from and have them help you.

Last but not least, visit the Windows Phone Forums. The people in there are quite knowledgable and can work with you. They will also go one on one with you via private e-mail.

The client BTW is far from lame!

John, I’ll take your advice…for now! It’s tough to slow down when frustration sets in — especially when I’ve made my career from supporting Windows PCs & servers for the last 17 years. Most everything seems so easy (until Windows 8 came out!) working with the desktop Windows versions. How difficult can e-mail be for a company like Microsoft, when you look at Outlook (2002 – 2010)? I think the problem is Windows Phone is like Windows Home anything. Maybe we need Windows Phone 8 Pro! Meanwhile, back to the manual….
