Windows Module Installer made 60+ restore points and killed my login

I was preparing to create a system image and rebooted Windows 10 21H2 before proceeding. Once it had booted it would not accept my PIN and there was no option to enter my password. In the advanced options I tried to restore from a restore point and discovered that there were about 70 restore points all created by Windows Module Installer. Restoring from them failed. I tried to rollback feature updates and system updates also failed. Microsoft Authenticator was of no help, so I’m about to do a reinstall and keep my stuff.

What was Windows Module Installer doing?
Anybody know why this has happened and how to avoid it in the future?

It is hard to tell, sometimes software breaks; Have you allow Windows to always update itself?

Just as you would not want a child driving a car nor should you allow Windows to update itself because the result has been proven unsafe and reckless.

Windows Modules Installer could have been installing whatever updates were being pushed to your computer, and even if it was under control by some method Windows may make an attempt to update itself.

Preview patches which are offered are not always good and they are mostly not ready for production environments or home use and happily Windows will install these for you, these may have caused you grief right now.

If you are on a wired or wireless connection setting both to metered updates will slow Windows down a little bit; if you use WUshowhide (Windows Updates Show/Hide tool) from Microsoft it can mitigate (with your diligence) Windows gluttonous desire to install everything.

I finally did a reinstall then once the dust settled, I restored all my stuff from Windoze_Old, deleted window$_Old. I ran chkdsk and then went on with my inage backup. So far all is well.
