I like to listen to music while I code and have always used Microsoft Media Player for that purpose. After upgrading to Vista Ultimate my Media Player still works but a strange thing has started to happen. When I play a music file or a video and want to stop the playback before the file is done, I have to click the stop button before clicking the red X or selecting File –> Exit or the file keeps on playing in what appears to be the background. The application does not appear in the task manager but the process does.

    Any ideas anyone?

See the section ‘Why won’t WMP stop playback when I close it?’ in WMP FAQ: A trouble-shooting guide for Windows Media Player problems.

Thanks Hans as always. I updated my drivers to no avail. I looked at the processes running and couldn’t see anything that would interact with Media Player so I started to look at my attached hardware.

My music is held on a Maxtor removable drive so I copied some to a regular hard drive. No change but I also have a portable computer, in this case an Intermec 700 Series, connected that Windows tries to sync with. I removed that and voila, no more problems. I believe the problem stems from the fact that the Intermec device is not supported by Media Player. This seems to cause Media Player to want to finish the song or video before closing. I have logged a call with the Intermec boffins but I don’t hold out much hope.
