Windows Media Player – delete files in Auto Play

I’ve created an Auto Playlist that shows all the files with “+” in their Genre. Now I want to delete all those files from the hard drive. Pressing “Del” on the file in the playlist simply removes it temporarily from the playlist (until it is refreshed). I want to delete the actual file from the hard disk. Any way to do that?

Can’t you simply open Windows Explorer by typing Windows Key + E then go to C:/User/User Name/My Music, select all the files you wish to delete, and delete them?

In media player press alt to bring up a popup menu, click tools>options>library tab

Is the option “Delete files from computer when deleted from library” checked?

If you want to do this from within Media Player, go to Options | Library and make sure “Delete files from computer when deleted from Library” is checked.

The Options checkbox is checked, as suggested, but it still does not delete the file.

On the other hand, when I go to the Music > Artists section of the WMP, and press Delete, a confirmation dialog appears warning me that I am about to delete the file. This dialog does not appear when I attempt to delete the file from the Auto playlist. The behaviour from the two different locations is different. Am I doing something wrong, or is that the expected behaviour?

I suppose this behaviour makes sense as a file could exist in more than one playlist.

You must remove it from the Library to delete the file. Playlists are just a way to organize music for some reason. Any file can be in mulitple playlists. Removing it from a playlist should not delete the file.

Ian and Joe – you are both correct, of course. It’s just like deleting a shortcut from the desktop. I should have realized that myself!
