I have a problem in playing mpg (the extension is not mpeg) in Windows Media Player 10. I cannot put much more explanation to the problem other than the little screen capture in the attached file. AVI files play O.K.
Should I upgrade to version 11 or do I need a codec, the option to automatically download is checked.
The attachment did not come out like it does, I get rainbow colours.

Patch reliability is unclear, but widespread attacks make patching prudent. Go ahead and patch, but watch out for potential problems. |

AskWoody LoungerMarch 18, 2008 at 1:17 pm #1102410I have tried for about 4 hours to solve this problem, downloaded filters, codecs etc. all to no avail. The mpg plays perfectly in Cyberlink but not in Windows Media Player. One thing I did find was that my techo had already installed Version 11 of WMP.
Any suggestions welcome, searching the web reveals it to be fairly common. -

AskWoody LoungerMarch 20, 2008 at 12:17 pm #1102695With excitement after hours of reading how many people have this problem, I have a solution for my system.
Open Windows Media Player (as stated previously I have Ver 11), go to
Tools>Options>Performance Tab>Advanced
Change the setting under Video Acceleration from “Use Overlays” to “Use high quality mode.”
There was no skill involved just luck.
I have attached a gif file showing the change. -

AskWoody LoungerMarch 21, 2008 at 4:39 am #1102824I have gone further with my research (after the compliments) and a whole bunch of new words to search on. I discovered the following site
http://www.deskshare.com/Resources/article…celeration.aspx%5B/url%5D I have put the link to the article that assisted me but there are 12 other links on the left hand side of the page. I worked throught this page and only had to cut the hardware acceleration by one notch. In fact I think it has improved general performance.
I returned the option in Windows Media Player to the defaults. Now both mpg and avi files play perfectly.
