I’m having problems reinstalling Windows ME on an HP Pavillion.

I can’t get the system to boot from the recovery CD — a recovery screen is supposed to appear but it doesn’t. I have reset the bios, following HP’s instructions, to place the CD drive first in boot order and have followed the instructions in HP’s support area.

When I reboot, I don’t see the drive light go on, so I’m not sure it’s looking to the CD for an operating system.

HP says that either I should reformat the HD or that the recovery CD is defective. I’m loath to reformat without knowing that I can finish complete the reinstall.

    Thanks, Andy

Maybe HP’s support is the defective component here? wink Seriously, I doubt that it’s the CD. You should definitely see the light go on on the drive; if it doesn’t at all then maybe the drive itself is dead or unplugged internally. Check all the connections to make sure they’re firmly seated. Double check your BIOS settings very carefully and make sure that nothing is amiss in the boot sequence. If the system has two CD drives, try inserting the disc into the other drive and see what happens.

I’m with you, format what? You have no way to get back to square one following that course if the optical drive is kaput!

Just to expand a little…. My Dell has an option at bootup to press F12 to get a boot menu. Does your HP do the same???

I too thought I had a problem as the BIOS showed the CD-ROM as the first boot device, but somehow, the PC got other ideas.

        Thanks, Mark & Chris,

I’m still tinkering with the thing. More later.

The HP doesn’t have a similar option that I can find.

I’m way over my head here, but could a bad MBR have an effect on booting from the CD drive, or does MBR only work on hard drive? If I can get the computer to start up from a 3 1/2 in floppy, can I do anything from a: ? I’m ready to take it into the shop.
