Was just curious…this seems to take as long as the rollups! Does everyone have to stare at that “Creating a restore point” for 10+ minutes while their HDD thrashes? CPU is at 3-12% all the time, and only on 3 of four cores…

I do run Disk Cleanup and defrag regularly…

YEP!! Every month! Part of its normal routine!

I use Task Manager to track its progress, though. It usually consumes anywhere from 3-15% of my CPU’s cycles while it’s running. For some reason, WU can’t seem to deal with the transition from “Creating Restore Point…” to “Installing Update KB890830” to well anymore, and just gets “stuck” on the creating restore point part of the process until the scanner’s actually done. For me, the process takes only about 4-7 minutes on one machine with a spinning HDD, and 3-5 minutes on my other machine with an SSD for its only drive.

This has been going on for me for a little over a year by now, so I’m used to it.

Sorry I don’t have more of a solution for you! 🙁

Thanks…it’s amazing…one would almost thing MSFT was slowing down W7 on purpose…Nah.  :/

Additional: After installing the newest tool, it keeps nagging the HDD@ 3-7% CPU time…and a reboot fixes THAT.

Of course, they never tell you that you should reboot after installing it, probably because they assume you’ve already installed other patches that DO require a reboot at the same time you updated the tool.

      Not at Defcon 1!
