Friends, I’m definitely a Noobs. My wife has a new Dell, with Win 7 Home Premium, 64 bit on it. Machine works OK.

Live Messenger does start automatically, though, as it is wont to do. We’d like to stop that.

We’ve followed the suggestions in Windows 7 all-in-one for Dummies, pgs 586, 587. But, we have a snag.

We can get to the sign-in Options screen OK, can uncheck boxes OK, but don’t have a way to save or apply. Our machine screen does NOT present the OK, Cancel, Apply, Help buttons at the bottom. Now slide bar to scroll down. Hence we cannot seem to save….

emailed Woody. “Wierd” he said, and a few other things. Ultimately he suggested the Lounge as a place for comment/help. He did say it might be necessary to do my editing in the automatic startup list. I’d need some pointers to do that.

ps, I’ve been on Medicare for 5 yrs. You’all will need to speak slowly and in mono-syllables….

    Thax for any help.

When Windows Live Messenger shows up, click in an empty area once to make sure it is active, then press ALT-T to display the Tools menu, Press O or click Options…, and then click the Sign In from the options on the left. The first Option to Automatically run Windows Live Messenger when I log on to Windows will be checked, click on it to uncheck it and then press Enter on the keyboard. Close messenger and on the next reboot it will not appear!

If you have any problems post a reply

Hi S. Dean and welcome to the Lounge!

Click on your “start” orb and type in the “search programs and files” field the following: msconfig and press enter. The System Configuration screen will come up. Click on the “Startup” tab and look for Live Messenger in the list of software that starts up automatically when you start Windows. If you see it in the list, uncheck the box, and click “Okay” to close the sheet. You will be prompted to reboot. That should do it.

      Hope this helps.

While using the MSCONFIG utility is a valid option, and certainly one worth knowing, I believe for beginners it is better to turn any AutoRun option off from the application IF it is available. In rare cases I have seen applications reapply the AutoRun setting from their own config every time they are run unless the setting is changed in the app itself. There is no real need to reboot after using MSCONFIG, unless you want to test the configuration.

      Nathan,

Thanks a bunch! This technique did work, first try. Wife is tickled pink…..

      Gerald,

I understand what you suggested, but did not need to invoke the really heavy duty hammer!
