Question about Windows Live Mail: I installed Live Mail in June of 2009 and used it for a few days and didn’t like it so I uninstalled it. I have been watching for the new version of Windows Live to come out and when it did a couple of months ago I decided to try it again. I’ve decided I like it better then the first version and decided to keep it until I noticed that all the personal email folders I set up in 2009 and converted in the original install were there but none of the new folders and none of the new emails I had been saving since then were converted. How do I get all my current email and personal folders converted into the new Live Mail? I’m runing Vista Ultimate 32-bit OS on a desktop , Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 2.66GHz and 4 Gig of memory, it runs very well and I like Vista but am considering converting to Windows 7 in 2011.

I uninstalled Live Mail again because none of my new email was converted.

You didn’t say what email you use. WLM can be set up to check many different web based and pop emails. I use WLM to check my RoadRunner email, my hotmail email and my Gmail. It very effectively checks all and I can send emails from whichever account I wish to. You do have to set WLM up with your present accounts. If you click on the icon in the upper left corner, then options, then email accounts, you can add your different email accounts from here.

Well, I finally decided I was going to move my Outlook Contacts and E-mail over to WLM 2011. After reading about the trials and troubles in here with E-mail, I did a little digging in the WLM forums and even in there I didn’t find a simple way of doing it. For you that are interested here is how I did it.

Step 1: Open Outlook, and go into your Account Properties “Advanced” and click the box next to “Leave a copy on server”. this is purely precautionary
Step 2: Open WLM and set up your e-mail accounts (pop3 or IMAP)
Step 3: Once those are configured, go the accounts in WLM and set up your In Box subfolders. Do this for all accounts and Inbox’s
Step 4: In WLM, select ALL e-mail currently in your WLM InBox, and Copy it to your Inbox “Storage Folder” The reason for this, is that once your Outlook e-mail hits your WLM Inbox you will now only have those e-mails and won’t have to wade through them to find the ones you just received.
Step 5: Go back to Outlook and select your Inbox. Highlight all of the messages in there, and Copy them to the WLM (@Hotmail or @MSN) Inbox that you have already set up in Outlook.
Step 6: Go get something to drink because now you have to wait a couple of minutes.
Step 7: Now that you have waited bring WLM back up and click on the dropdown arrow on Send and Receive and choose Update All. Your e-mail from Outlook should now be in your WLM Inbox. If it isn’t go get another cup of coffee and wait a few minutes more.
Step 8: Highlight the e-mail now in your WLM inbox and drag it to the Inbox folder or the subfolder you created in Step 3.
Step 9 Now that you have everything there, you can go back to Outlook and delete the e-mail account.
Step 10: Congratulations!

dislike of limited features and finding how to set to my liking, wish I had version 2009.

Well, I got all of the contacts that I needed imported over.
I made it pretty easy on myself.
I have always used the catagories in Outlook, and have a contact folder just for those personal/private contacts. so what I did was to do an advanced find to make sure they were all in there.
Next I did an import export for just for that contact folder and saved it to a .csv on my desktop. Once that was done I simply imported that .csv into WLM, did a clean up for duplicates and Done!

I seem to be missing the “Tools” however so I can set the send / receive interval, and I haven’t figured out yet how to set a signature.

Ok,
I have my signature done, in HTML but I have a couple of problems.
1: Signature does not automatically show up in new e-mail. Yes I have it set to the default
2: I can’t remember how I did this in Outlook and that is when I “inserted” my HTML signature in the new e-mail, it showed up as formated but with at least two lines separating the lines? Does that make sense?
In other words it looks as if I hit the return key twice. As I said I remember something like this happening in Outlook but I don’t remember what the fix was.

Ok I found the solution to part two of this and that is to use “Shift” Enter.

Unfortunately, I do not commonly use signatures at home. Have you checked that the highlighted areas are checked or filled in?

I would assume you check marked the Add signatures to all outgoing messages. Have you set up the advanced section? otherwise I’m not sure.

Ok,
This is just too odd and is making me re-think WLM which will make me re thing waiting until Verizon gets the Windows Phone.
Here is what is happening.
This afternoon I posted a question in the Spreadsheets section of the lounge. I got some very helpful replies, and all showed up in the Unread Mail of the correct account. When I read the mail they dissapeared and I can’t find them anywhere. I have a rule in place to move them to my folder for this lounge, but only the first reply made it there.
I have checked everyfolder that I have and those 4 e-mails are no where to be found.
Any ideas?

That is strange. Since I do not store emails in this manner, I could not hazzard a guess, except that perhaps they were moved to another folder in your documents. Seems very strange, but we do sometimes see strange behavior with PC’s. I don’t have rules set up to move emails to storage folder automatically as most of my emails (personal PC only now) are just deleted and those I wish to save I just manually move. Sorry

I use Windows Mail. Sorry it has taken so long to give you the answer but have been away and busy. I’m not sure any of the answers that were posted will actually allow me to install WLM and have all my personal folders converted, I do need all the information I have stored int them.
