We hope to upgrade the wife’s PC from Vista to Win8, but a problem has arisen.

As Windows Mail is incompatible with the new system, I exported her emails to a flash drive and tried to import them in to Thunderbird and eM client, but neither will accept .eml files. Deciding we would probably have to use Windows Live Mail I imported the emails to WLM and they open without any trouble.

However, the whole of yesterday evening was spent trying to get WLM to accept and send emails. After creating a MS account with the name ********@sky.com, which works with W. Mail, selecting the same password as currently used, and the whole rigmarole of getting a 7 digit code for the Sky account and 4 digits for the backup Yahoo account, I tried to receive mail, only to be informed that the password I had just set was incorrect. Then followed a series of reporting a forgotten password, followed by emails and automated phone calls from MS with a new code, which didn’t do anything, except ask me to submit again. Just before going to bed my wife had a look at her Yahoo email, and there was a message from MS which allowed the password to be changed. She chose a new password, but this morning everything was still as before.

I had another look at the last email today, and there were options to reply or close the account, both of which I took up. I replied that we had closed the account, and was the same thing likely to happen if we made another attempt to start from scratch.

Whilst awaiting a reply, if any, I have two questions for the lounge. Will ********@sky.com work with WLM as it does with WM, and does anyone know of an email client that will accept messages in .eml format, preferably allowing my wife to retain her current email address?

PS. Has any human being ever managed to make WLM work?

hotmail works most of the time
in between the times they mess it up trying to ‘improve’ or ‘fix’ it

Thanks for the reply, but isn’t Hotmail a web based system, like Yahoo? Furthermore, I believe it is part of MS, therefore not my favourite company at present – they sent an email allowing the password to be changed, with an option to reply at the bottom. But it couldn’t be sent, as it’s a ‘no reply address’, which they FORGOT to mention.

Also your last line hardly encourages giving it a trial.

This page shows how to set-up sky mail. I does not mention WLM but its basically the same. I suggest using POP.

Ya, in this case a Microsoft email account pretty much configures itself with WLM, while others may need server, port and authentication settings entered manually. I can attest WLM definitely works having used version 2009 since 2009 or so (and because that’s the only version that works with XP :cool:), growing to include 8 accounts now without any malfunctions.

Hello George, just wanted to tell you that I have WLMail2011 for about 2-1/2 years, it came with the computer. It has wonderful features, but also is giving me unending glitches and constant headaches. However, in fairness to it, many others who have this email client showed surprise at my complaints. Maybe I got a lemon? Who knows. At any rate I hope you can find a good solution to the problems. 🙂

Hello George, just wanted to tell you that I have WLMail2011 for about 2-1/2 years, it came with the computer. It has wonderful features, but also is giving me unending glitches and constant headaches. However, in fairness to it, many others who have this email client showed surprise at my complaints. Maybe I got a lemon? Who knows. At any rate I hope you can find a good solution to the problems. 🙂

I strongly suggest you upgrade to WLM 2012 as your version is very ‘buggy’. You won’t lose anything in doing so.

Thank you so much Roderunner, are you sure I won’t lose my folders and files if I don’t back them up before upgrading to 2012? If so I’m glad since I’m never sure whether my backups are correctly done or not… But if I may ask of your kindness a couple of questions:

I don’t know how I lost most of my folders (the ones I created) and the files inside them, I saw them somewhere but didn’t know how to pull them out into my email again. My questions:

1. Will the upgrading leave the lost items where they are so I can hopefully recuperate them into my new WLMail2012?

2. As to your sentence:

This page shows how to set-up sky mail. It does not mention WLM but its basically the same. I suggest using POP.

Is “sky mail” an email client and similar to WLMail? I believe I have POP…

That is one question I can’t answer as I only have the default folders.

Most mail is at something (pop or smtp) xxxx .com & uses the same SSL (secure socket layer & port numbers for incoming & outgoing mail.
