A friend to me has a laptop with Windows 2000 SP3. As I understand it, some years ago it had Office 2000 installed but it was later uninstalled.

When he some days ago installed Office 2000 premium he selected that everything on CD1 and CD2 should be run from the computer.

After installation Windows Installer starts every time he starts Excel or Word. I have seen so many questions about Installer all over the net, many of them regarding problems applying a patch (SP1-3) to Office. In this case he has Installer 2.0 (came with Windows SP3 I think).

There has never been any version prior to Office 2000 on the computer (some have had problems with dual version; 97 and 2000).

I have heard something about KB265194 “OFF2000: Windows Installer Appears Every Time a Program Is Started”. There is a discussion about different methods, but the first one includes the use of a resource kit tool: orktools.exe and the link on the page to it is broken.

I know about the use of “unregserver” and “regserver” when having problems with Excel and the association with files, but this problem includes both Excel and Word.

Maybe I’m not on the right solution anyway. My question is: is this problem caused by selecting everything on the CDs during install to be run from the computer or anything else. If so any help is appreciated.

    Regards,

With Windows 2000 or Windows XP with Office 2000 or 2002 installed, every account when first using any office product, the installer MUST run to finish setting up the ALL of the related items for that account. If one was to let the installer run the first time, it should not need to be run again.
Since Office was removed and then installed again, this process must be gone through again.

Has the installer been run or is it being aborted?

        Thanks for reply

Yes, the installer has been run and not been aborted.

Also as I understand it now, the OS was reinstalled on the computer when the “old version” of Office 2000 was there. This resulted in not being able to run any Office program. The files where on the computer, but not being able to execute.

Then, as I described, he installed Office 2000 recently, and the Installer starts up.

I have not seen anything of the Installer on my machine (WinXP/Office2000), configuration etc. apart from when I choose to add something to the Office installation or with the obnoxious “on first run”. Then it works OK.

        Regards.

Is there any other possible cause?

Any difference between the options during install “run from computer” and “run everything from computer”?

          Hi Argus,

The 8.9Mb Resource Kit Microsoft Office 2000 can be downloaded from:
          http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/a…ox.htm#orktools%5B/url%5D
There’s a link near the top of this page that takes you to the kit, about 3/4 of the way down the page.

          Cheers

macropod and StuartR thanks for replies.

I will take a new look on my friends laptop 12 Mars, and do a search on it based on the knowledge from thread following post 83329. There may be a conflict between versions; O2000 premium was installed after O2000 pro.

I will then come back and either ask for new help or report the result.

            Regards,

The problem was solved with a reinstall of Office and install of SR-1a.

              Thanks for advises.

              Argus
