      I don’t know what causes this, but another way to get rid of it (without renaming the folder) might be:
      – Navigate to a folder that does not have ‘Unspecified’.
      – Select Tools | Folder Options…
      – Activate the View tab.
      – Click ‘Apply to all folders’.

      This looks similar to the
      View > Arrange Icons By… > Groups
      setting.
      Perhaps the default setting of the folder has no sort-by column selected and so XP doesn’t know which groups should be ‘specified’…..
