• Windows Explorer Folders view blank

After upgrading IE 5.5 to IE 6 on Win2K Pro, the folders view (left pane) of Windows Explorer is blank (gray). Fixes for similar problems under Win98/ME do not work, specifically:

    – Repair IE using Add/Remove Programs
    – Delete registry key for IE ExplorerBars

    Any help would be appreciated.

    TIA

After removing IE 6 and reverting to IE 5.5, Internet browsing seemed broken. The IE link bar buttons did not work, but clicking on links in the IE history worked. Buttons on web pages no longer worked and I cound not read email with Outlook.

Trying to reinstall IE 6 gave a message about a pending install already in progress. I deleted ‘PendingFileRenameOperations’ registry keys and installed IE 6 with mixed results.

I booted in safe mode, waited for the CPU meter to settle at zero then booted back into Win2000.

So far everything seems to work now.

I think windows file protection was honked and somehow booting into safe mode cleared it. Something about being unable to copy files into the dll cache according to the Event log.

You can also go to START | RUN and type sfc /scannow that will replace any bad system files.
