Is there any way to set Windows Explorer to open in a specific directory? For instance, most of my files are saved to a network drive. Can I set Explorer to open on that drive each time I open Explorer?

Yep.
Create your shortcut and enter the command as(e.g.):
%SystemRoot%explorer.exe /n, /e,c:
to open in c:

But is there a way to get it to work from right-click on Start button? That’s how I always open Explorer, never from a shotcut on desktop (the right-click on Start is easier to get to and always visible). I’ve heard the answer is no but wondered if you knew otherwise. It always starts on D:Documents and SettingsStart Menu which is a totally worthless default.

Not if you’re trying to use Explorer to modify the start menu it isn’t

I always assumed that right clicking the start button and choosing explore was intended to open explorer for modifying the contents of the start menu, so any other default would defeat the object.

Is there a way to get explorer to open
-in the normal dual pane view
-with “My Computer” as the focus
-with all local and network drives expanded underneath it on the left pane
-with all the local and network drives shown on the right pane.

Basically if you open windows explorer and select and expand My Computer, that is the look I want. I couldn’t figure out how to get there with the rest of the information in the post.

If you have a WIndows-enhanced keyboard, press the Windows Key + E. If you don’t, you can install TweakUI and set “My Computer” as the “first icon on desktop” – after which, you can simply type in EXPLORER in the run prompt and get the same thing.

Sorry if this sound picky, but surely there has to be a way to put this in a shortcut as well? There seems to be all kinds of other special variables surrounded by %. Wouldn’t there be one for My Computer?

You would think, but there is no environmental variable (%%) for My Computer. It’s hard-wired into the system.

I did a little fiddling with the info from the knowledge base article in an earlier post

and found that the following syntax gets me exactly what I wanted:

%SystemRoot%explorer.exe /e,/select,c:

I.E. the “select” gets the parent, and “My Computer” is the parent of “c:”

Use the Windows key on your keyboard (between the ALT and CTL keys) in conjunction with ‘E’. This opens explorer with “My Computer” open and all network drives shown.

Have you considered not using Explorer? I haven’t used it for at least a year and can see no reason to again. Control 3 will do exactly what you want.
