More often than not when I close Explorer it crashes with the error message “”This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If problem persists contact the program vendor. Details:Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module OLE32.DLL at 0167:7ff38b82”. On acknowledging this it then closes wiping out most of the icons on the task bar, but otherwise everything else seems to work. I found no joy in the MS Knowledge Base. I’ve cleaned the registry, run thorough ScanDisk, replaced Explorer from the installation disk and cursed it. I’m on Win98SE. Thanks for listening>…Mike Purcell

The first item in this google search may have your error or a close solution. Sorry I wasn’t
      able to hyperlink it .

Thank you. Close but no cigar. However my local User Group came up with a member who had exactly the same problem. Solution: Clean reinstall of Windows. I thought this might happen, but was in denial.

Yes I’ve been told the same thing. 🙁 Until I get most of the files burned onto CD that I want to save I’ve opted for Wizmo from http://grc.com[/url%5D to close down my system. The IE error still appears and after I close that window Gizmo does it’s thing and shuts down my system properly.

          Cheers, Di

Sounds like a version mismatch – you could try replacing the OLE32.DLL file on your system, and if you get a different error message, you’re making progress…. laugh

Since DLLs can require others (other DLLs that is) to be the same version, a clean install might be your quickest way out of a headache and premature aging. Depends on how much you want to tinker.

Thank you for trying to help. The problem is getting progressively worse so I’ve scrubbed Explorer and am using Power Desk with the cut-out Explorer option and all is well. It’s far better than Explorer, too.
The clean Win reinstal didn’t help so I’m beginning to suspect a virus has snuck through and possibly corrupted the registry. My next step is to have several healthy glasses of Glenlivet and do the dread “Format C:”. Ain’t computing fun?
      Regards…Mike Purcell cheers
