• Windows Defender Offline not working

Having just been made aware, by Fred Langa in his current article in the Newsletter, of this tool, I downloaded it and put it on a c.d.

When my computer, running XP SP3 Home, boots from this disc, I am presented with a small graphic for a minute or two, then a message which reads:

    Your PC needs to restart:
Please hold down the power button
    Error Code: 0x0000005D
    Parameters:
    0x03060801
    0x68747541
    0x69746E65
    0x444D4163

I have absolutely no idea what is meant by that. Do you?

Is your cd for a 32bit pc.

The system file checker apparently replaced a few files (the Read light on the c.d. drive flashed a few times while running), but has made no difference, and ESET’s scanner found nothing.

Unless your pc is acting strange, I would say you have a bad WDO cd.

Having downloaded the program to the desktop first, then burning the c.d., I thought that may have been the case too. I downloaded it again, directly to the c.d. burner, and made a new one.

🙁 It gives exactly the same result.

I have no (other) reason to suspect the computer.

Do have at least 768 mb of RAM? WDO requires at least that amount of memory to run.
See; http://windows.microsoft.com/is-is/windows/windows-defender-offline-system-requirements for a list of requirements.

      Yes Jerry, I have 1.5GB of r.a.m.

    • #1386117

Have you had problems using that particular type of cd for other purposes?

      • #1386144

Roderunner, they’re Verbatim CD-R and I have used quite a few to record audio. I’ve also used one to make an Acronis rescue disc. I have no idea if it works or not.
I think I shall burn Defender to another brand of disc and see if that works.

Jerry, I have no idea what SSE2, PAE and NX is, or are, so I can’t comment

    • #1386145

      I prefer using dvd-rw.

      • #1386148

🙁 That was disappointing. I just put Defender on a Packard Bell CD-R which also gives me the same eorror codes.

Can WDO be run from a thumbdrive ?

      • #1387695

Yes WDO can be booted from a USB thumbdrive. Is the Boot from CD enabled in the BIOS of the PC?

      • #1400534

Yes you can run Windows Defender Offline from a thumbdrive. It works fine. Just be sure you are using the correct version, i.e. 32 bit vs 64 bit.

    • #1386156

      RR,

You bet that’s the way I’ve always run it. When you run the download it gives you the option to burn to CD/DVD or USB Key. HTH

Defender’s web page says that it formats a u.s.b. drive prior to installing the software. My u.s.b. drives already have software on them, otherwise I would have done that, since that version may be updated – whereas the c.d. version can not.

I shall acquire another thumb drive and do it, but I would nevertheless like to know why my c.d. versions don’t work.

This is what I found on Chanh’s Blog (not that it will help you, but just for information):

The Windows 8 was having an impression that it will run on old equipment and less demanding than Vista or Windows 7 but although it is indeed requirement less memeory to run when you run in a virtual machine but when you try to actually install on a real older machine you are in for some headache!

One of the most stand out requirement is “Secured Boot requires a new UEFI BIOS, Physical Address Extension (PAE), NX, and SSE2″ and if your old pc does not support these features then you are out of luck!

Without the above features, you are likely to get this error below or variation of this!

      Your PC needs to restart.
please hold down the power button.
      Error code: 0X0000005D
      Parameters:
      0X03060A00
      0X68747541
      0X69746E65
      0X444D4163

If you start searching you will find you are not along on this particular issue. I have this problem and still looking for a solution! I will post a follow up if I ever find a solution to this!

Hmm – am I missing something here? The matter of older hardware seems to be negated by my experience in that WDO ran perfectly on a laptop (Acer Aspire 5720) last week, and that machine must be something like 5 years old now. That was off the CD drive; I will admit that it didn’t to begin with but that was because I forgot that the CD has to be ‘clicked’ down onto the central drive on laptops. The CD was downloaded and burnt on my even older Dell.

I would also have thought that as WDO boots from the CD/Pendrive the OS on the machine is irrelevant. The PC I checked uses Vista

Blacktomcat, I thought that I had elected to receive email notification of additions to the thread at Majogeeks (as I did here), but obviously I didn’t so I was unaware of that response.

In view of oklwood‘s experience, and the informatioin in that link, I think I may as well throw in the towel and forget it.

Enable boot from USB must also be enabled in the BIOS.
