The latest building Windows 8 blog post – Redesigning chkdsk and the new NTFS health model.

Does this mean I can use the beta to run the enhanced chkdsk on all my external drives?
Yes, I assume it does. The article says that it can scan NTFS drives regardless of the source of those drives. Haven’t tried it though.
I seem to remember that ‘chkdsk’ goes back a long ways and has been required since the NTFS file system was first used.
And, going back that far, I’ve had one BIG problem with it, and that’s because it runs and gives you (or me) NO readout, as
to what it’s done, what it fixed, etc. And, no option to fix something, create a Error Log or anything like that.
Chkdsk writes a full set of results in the Windows log files and is easily read using the event viewer after reboot. Here’s an example of how to read the results.

Now, go back to the OS’s, like ’98, ME, and even XP (if run on a FAT-32 hard drive) and you can run “Scandisk” which does
show you exactly what it’s doing and can even create a log file, etc.
I still use Scandisk, run from a DOS boot disk, to check my XP drive (In FAT-32 format) and any other drive, not in NTFS format.
Personally, I’d love to see a Scandisk type of drive repair program for Win-8 and not something even more anonymous than
what we have now.
Just one opinion, from one old Tech.
Cheers Mates!
