:(I have Windows 8.1 all updated on a Toshiba laptop. On October25 my genealogy program, Legacy, worked fine. The next day it wouldn’t open. I have done everything I could think of including uninstalling and reinstalling the software including older versions that had worked before also. I took it into Geek Squad and they worked on it for 5 days and couldn’t come up with an answer. I am wondering whether it might be a Windows update that is causing the problem and if so, how do I go about finding which one. I was thinking about uninstalling all recent updates in October and seeing if that would work. I don’t have an exact list because Geek Squad reinstalled all recent updates from the last several months. I am thinking if I uninstalled everything that is dated in October whether that might work. Since these are just updates, it shouldn’t affect Windows itself. I will have to turn off auto updates and then if that works, start reinstalling one at a time if I can. Opinions on this please.

AskWoody_MVPNovember 15, 2014 at 11:54 am #1475656Probably at this point it would be prudent to do a System Restore to a date when the program last worked. The downside to that is there may not be a point that old.
The main issue I see with uninstalling the updates is time, will take awhile as they have to be done one at a time and may require reboots after some of them.

AskWoody PlusNovember 15, 2014 at 5:12 pm #1475767Not only Windows updates, but also other installs or uninstalls can interfere with legacy OPs. You might want to comb through the mind, what have you changed, and where? Not that you are at fault, rather, simply, some changes roll upwards and downwards and across.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 16, 2014 at 5:50 am #1475817As you haven’t mentioned it, have you tried the Windows Compatibility Troubleshooter?

AskWoody LoungerNovember 16, 2014 at 2:21 pm #1475854I tried the compatibility mode and Microsoft calls the program incompatible.l I tried a Restore and the earliest date I had was Oct 30 and that wouldn’t restore for some reason. So, I think this calls for a complete restore of the operating system. I have what is called a restore on a flash drive and there is a system partition on the harddrive. I would like if someone could point me to written directions on the process before I jump off the deep end. Thanks to everyone for the ideas.

Ancestral Quest is compatible with Legacy PAF files and runs fine on Win 8.1.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 17, 2014 at 3:25 pm #1476006This sounds like what happened to my office’s Olympus dictation/transcription software. One day the program simply would not open. One of our techs later told us the program was force closing as soon as it opened. After much searching I was able to track it down to a Windows update. After uninstalling the update, the program was back to normal. I was extremely lucky in searching and was able to find the particular update to uninstall. If you don’t know which update it is, I guess you would have to uninstall them one at a time until you find the culprit. Or maybe someone else knows a better method of determining if it is an update and/or which one.
