Having problems updating MSE on Windows 7?
Here is the OFFICIAL Microsoft Security Intelligence resource page
to download updates for manual MSE updating.

Upon landing on this page, scroll down to and select the MSE subsection:

    MSE-Definitions

Download the MSE file according to your system bitness
    i.e. either 32bit or 64bit (usually a 100 ~ 130mb download weight)
Once downloaded, you should have either a file called:

    mpam-fe.exe (for 32bit systems)
    OR
    mpam-feX64.exe (for 64bit systems)

TIP: Having taskmanager/ resmon open at this point before updating helps to determine when the definition update is complete as there is no visual indication that the update is complete

    Double-click mpam-fe.exe or mpam-feX64.exe to update definitions.

Once finished, open the MSE program interface and check the definition update has been successful by checking the definition date.

You can now delete the downloaded mpam-fe file once complete.

Does this have to be done every day?

Pretty much every day, but it should happen automatically. This fix is for when it’s not behaving.

        cheers, Paul

I have three computers with Windows 7 – one continues to update daily the other two require a manual download.  Two are laptops (Dell E6540) – one updates and one does not; the other is a Dell Optiplex desktop.

Are there any errors in Event Viewer?
Have you identified the process that updates the definitions?

            cheers, Paul

Microsoft security Essentials has been updating fine until Friday.

      Downloaded mpam-fe.exe from Microsoft site

. Ran it and no work. Have tried several times today and no work. mpam-fe.exe changed version most times when I downloaded so I assume Microsoft is updating the definations. Current version is 1.425.79.0. What else do I need to do?

      Help

Make sure you are downloading and installing the proper bitness (32-bit or 64-bit) for your system. I find that the download takes a couple of minutes to complete. Once downloaded, double-click the .exe and wait another 1-2 minutes before opening MSE (I do not have MSE open beforehand). Current version is 1.425.89.0. Good luck.
