Windows 7 hibernation not working

Hi,
I have a an ACER aspire 5740-6378 running Windows 7. I bought this laptop in Feb of this year and almost from the beginning hibernation would not work (that is when the laptop was brand new I do remember it working but after about the first week it stopped). When I try to put the laptop into hibernation mode, or when it automatically tries to enter hibernation (due to low battery or inactivity), the laptop turns the screen off and locks the account but doesn’t do anything else. As soon as I touch a key it shows the me account login page. When I log in, all my programs and windows are still open. I do not believe it is even entering into sleep mode for 2 reasons: 1) there is no delay when I hit a key, the screen comes on immediately (with sleep mode there is a short delay), 2) the LEDs indicate the laptop is on and I can hear the fans working and the network LED blinks.
Any suggestion on how to fix this beside reinstalling Windows? are their certain applications or drivers known to cause this problem?

Hi,
I tried turning hybernation off (it was on) and then back on again. No change.
powercfg -requests shows no requests at all.
powercfg -a says my laptop supports S3 but not S1 and S2 (not supported by firmware).
So I updated my BIOS to the latest version, but still no change.
Any other suggestions?

I also ran powercfg -energy. Here are some results that seem relevant:
– Sleep State 3 & 4 are supported, 1 & 2 are not.
– There are several errors that say: USB Suspend:USB Device not Entering Suspend (the only USB device currently connected to the laptop is a mouse)
– there are several errors that say: Platform Power Management Capabilities:ACPI _PSD Object Failed Validation. “There is a problem with the definition of the ACPI _PSD object on this computer. Installing the latest system firmware (BIOS) may resolve this issue.”
anyone know what these indicate?

It sounds like your in Hybrid Sleep:
I use hybrid which kept not working – using the ‘powercfg -requests’ in a cmd prompt(started with admin privileges) I found a prog. that was constantly sending requests so it wouldn’t go into sleep (sound driver).
The ‘powercfg /?’ command will give you the help files.

I disables hybrid sleep. When I enable it, neither sleep nor hibernation work. in fact, sleep starts behaving like hibernation: screen turns off and my account is locked, but laptop remains on.
