I have a problem installing windows updates and also my Windows 7 program has been crashing lately quite often.

To begin, My computer is an HP Pavilion Elite m9190a. When I first purchased it, it had Windows Vista Ultimate installed. As soon as Windows 7 was available, I bought it and upgraded my computer. I have been totally satisfied until around the 1st of Jan. 2011, that is when windows started crashing. I would get a blue screen that stated that there was a problem with one of my discs and the the system would check it out and repair anything that was found. This happened several times, now windows just freezes up or shuts down on its own or freezes andthe I get a little window that states Windows has stopped working but will be restarted, which it does. In the mean time I have lost what ever i have been working on. This can happen up to 3 times a day and is very annoying when you are working on something and then you loose everything.
I also have not been able to install 5 important (so called) updates. KB2433299, KB2413186, KB2409055, KB2289078, KB982726.
Also, Windows tried to update my Windows Live Essentials 2011 (KB2434419) which I do not want.
When I tried to install them I get an unknown error message code 646. I do not know if this are related to the problem above
    Has anyone had similar problems?

Assuming you already have and image and/or backup of all important data, get Crystal disk infoand see what that says about your drive(s). Also consider getting and running the long test of Seagate disk tool. If they show no signs of caution or failure then test the memory, check connections, how long since the innards were cleaned out and thermal paste was replaced?
Sounds like you problem could be intermittent hardware failure if you can’t identify any common software action that precipitates the downfall. You are also not that far out from when the problem started so it would not hurt to do a system restore to between Christmas and the New Year, when everything was working.

      Joe, Welcome to the Lounge.

I think Byron may be right. This sounds suspisiously like a hard ware problem, and heat is a good candidate. I would also open the case and do a good cleaning (accumulated dirt and dust bunnies can cause things to overheat in a hurry. The thermal paste should be available at most PC stores. While this housekeeping is being done, you might as well replace the Cmos battery (looks like a watch battery) on the motherboard.

A pretty comprehensive article on cleaning can be found at Bleeping Computer. It’s older but still appropriate. Many other similar articles can be found with a simple Google search.

      buckeye,
Hello… My OS (Windows 7 64 ) had a similar problem, Ms has a “hotfix” http://news.softpedia.com/news/Windows-7-Random-Freezes-Hotfix-Available-152054.shtml for me this did not work . What i did to get rid of this problem was as follows…
      1. Recovered to a time before the problem was manifesting ( No Ms Patches or Updates) I use Acronis 2010 or Macrium Reflect Free for imaging.
      2. Only use a 3rd party security programs “Malwarebytes Pro” and “Norton Internet Security 2011” Zero MS stuff
      3. No more freeze ups. and never applying Patches or updates, except for Norton and Malwarebytes Pro updating automatically.

I realize that my strategy is “unorthodox” for most and has many detractors However it works… and has now for several months (for “7” ) and over a year for my Vista machine. If you need more detail post back and would be happy to answer your questions. Regards Fred
